We're guessing everyone is really loving the Star Trek trailer, because the movie hasn't even been released yet and already they're starting to work on the sequel!
Paramount Pictures' Star Trek will hit theaters on May 8th, and the studio has already hired writers to pen the next screenplay.
The current film's director and producer, J.J. Abrams, has also agreed to produce the sequel.
With writers already working on the follow-up script, they plan to have it penned by this winter and ready to go for a summer release in 2011.
Damon Lindelof (Lost), one of the writers, said "There's obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn't even come out yet. But we're so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed. Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month. With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do."
Hopefully the first movie doesn't bomb at the box office! If so, we're thinking the sequel might go straight to DVD.
There was also a photo of the Spock, Kirk, and Uhura action figures.

A sequel being worked on before the movie is even out with as yet unseen new people playing the TOS characters is a very hopeful sign. Makes me even hope they will do an ENT movie or revive ENT in some more TV episodes. I'd love to see them say the abomination was just a holo invention of Ryker's and Trip and T'Pol live to see the Federation born. I am such a hopeless optimist!

I love hopeless optimists. They make life worthy to be lived.

Since the new movie is essentially a reboot, the sequel will be too. So if Trek gets a new lease it will be a rebooted version (much like the new BSG). I think TPTB will just want to forget about the old Treks, including ENT.
Sorry to be the pessimist but that's who I am.

Yeah, I suspect the most we might get is an appearance by an old T'Pol, wistfully referring to a long-dead Trip.

In fact I don't be particularly eager to see this movie. But, honestly, I have to say I didn't love any movies about Star Trek.

Well, if it somehow manages to be a wistful comment that makes clear they were very important to each other, preferably for a loooong time, so that it's clear once and for all that *the_abomination* was a total crock, I'd settle for it.

The Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, First Contact - those are good! But I too am extremely dubious about this one. Meh. I just can't get excited.

Good point.

I suppose it is better not to get excited about this new movie, then be pleasantly surprised if it is enjoyable. And if it is not, well, you won't be disappointed and can just rake it over the coals in a review on your favorite ST sites.
