Well I would guess that they have laundry staff of enlisted personel kind of like the stewerds who serve dinner only for house keeping.

A Quatermaster is the person responible for all the creature comforts, uniforms, and other clothing on bases or ships. Ciggerates (BAD), booze, (which technically isn't allowed on a ship) cards, uniforms, undies, socks, condoms (sometimes). Think of it as a whole convenience store. You can't get anything to write home about. But everyday mundane little necessities and a few luxuries that you don't need but will keep from going nuts. In theory at least.

Uhh, nope. A quartermaster on a ship is an enlisted member of the navigation team. A QM does navigation fixes, maintains charts and nav equipment, etc. Serves as helmsman during special evolutions, such as entering port, underway replenishment and general quarters. On smaller ships will also be responsible for visual communications (flashing light and signal flags).

Storekeepers (SK) (being renamed logistics specialists) are responsible for all supplies, repair parts, etc. Ships servicemen (SH) run the ship's store and barbershop and laundry. On the newer ships there are now a lot of self service laundry machines. Go watch Carrier on PBS.

I don't know how the Army splits out the support duties between quartermaster, food service, etc. The Air Force just goes to Target and Starbucks.

Sorry to entering this so late, have gotten behind the power curve.

Thanks for clearing that up Navigator.

I wonder why, then, on Enterprise, it's the Quartermaster who maintains the Uniforms and in in charge of clothing for away teams, etc. I wonder why they chose that job title. Maybe it was a screw up?

Stuff could have changed -- I'm going to assume your grandmother is retired from that by now?

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of this stuff gets contracted out now, at least in places like Iraq.

Different service branches probably organize it differently. The Navy does it one way and the Air Force another way. :dunno:

Quartermaster's duties in the Navy have not changed for a very long time. I would recommend that for a good overview, go look up quartermaster on Wikipedia. To answer the other question, why did they use the term quartermaster to designate a supply function, I can only answer that the writers' concept of the military was probably gained by watching "Top Gun" over and over while in a drug induced haze.

Not that I'm trying to contradict you. I'm sure you've looked it up. I just usually find it safer NOT to disagree with my grammy when it comes to her military knowledge. I tend to avoid conflict. I mean after all she's Grammy, and compared to her I am an inexperienced brat.

Why are you choking Alelou? It isn't like I go looking for trouble. Grammy taught me not to back down unless I knew I was wrong or hurting someone. As far as I know neither has happened yet. Anyhow 99% of the time I just smile and say Yes Grammy. She told me what a quatermaster does, so I smile and say yes Grammy.

:) WG, I just doubt anybody on these boards would say you avoid conflict. That's not a bad thing -- we are here because we enjoy debating about TnT with each other, after all.

Maybe my definition of avoidance is unusual. All I can say I have never knowingly and deliberately put something out there just to watch it blow up. I never will either. Anyhow back to the laundry... Honestly the idea of a crewman doing someone else's laundry creeps me out to no end. I know I don't want some stranger in mine. I wonder what they think when they have to wash the Captain's underware, people hide a lot in the laundry.

Or leave things in the laundry accidentally...

Suppose the crewman in charge of laundry discovered Trip's clothing left in T'Pol's laundry?

Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.
