La Befana

Postby Asso » Sat Jan 05, 2008 9:52 am

I want to say to you all something.
You know tomorrow is Epiphany, a Christian feast intended to celebrate the "shining forth" or revelation of God to mankind in human form, in the person of Jesus.
In Rome, ( blending the sacred and the profane, how it often happens) "Epiphania" was transformed into Befana, the great fair held at that season, when sigillaria of terracotta or baked pastry were sold.

Well, in Italy wy say this feast is the true feast of women.
Obviously, we are joking, considering that Befana appears as a HAG!

Anyway, I want to send my best wishes to all Christians who are believers, but... :D also to all women! (No offence!)
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

What a truly interesting combination of Christian and pagan symbolism. Kinda like St. Nicholas became Santa Claus. I've never heard of "Befana", although I've heard of the Epiphany, of course. Where I'm from we celebrate the arrival of the three magi this Sunday. How do your people get the three kings into all this, or are they not involved?

Here's an interesting link I found with Befana in it, complete with a recipe for King Cake. It's got EVERYBODY's Epiphany traditions in it, I think. 8)

The three kings are not involved, but a legend exists.

According to the popular story, the Three Kings, directed to Bethlehem to carry the gifts to Jesus, incapable of finding the way, asked for an old woman. Despite their persistence thet she followed them to visit the child, the woman didn't go out of her house, to accompany them.
Later, she regretted because she didn't follow them. So, she get ready a sac of candies, and goes out of her house, to look for them, without managing to do. So she began to stop at every house she found along the walk, giving the children she was meeting candies, with hope that one of them was Jesus. And so, she yet would turn the world, doing gifts to all children, for pardon.

Thanks for your explanation of La Befana, Asso! As for the representation of the hag, among modern Pagans she is the Crone Goddess, the wise old women who has lived through the stages of maiden and mother, so has experienced all the stages of womanhood. She is the healer, the advisor, the loving grandmother.

Yes, you are right.
It's strange how a so great deal of perceptions, different and far the one from the other, can be blended in the evolving of the human path.

Love the avatar, BTW. :D

It's flavored with passionfruit
an appropriate ingredient, don't you think?
