Once I accidentally had the German dubbing on my DVDs as I was about to watch The Xindi. Man, that neuro-pressure scene just wasn't the same. They sounded like different characters, especially T'Pol!

I'm so glad we generally don't dub programs on Swedish TV (other than kiddie shows).

^That was on AXN for Latin America, right? Subtitles, I remember. It Spain it was on some sort of Sci Fi channel they have called Calle 13, and it was dubbed. The horror!

I do like the change on Harbinger Escriba mentioned. T'Pol saying, "That doesn't justify you behavior" sounds a lots more shipperish to me... I've only ever watched it in English, 'cause I run away from dubbed stuff. I think the only show I did watch dubbed was Babylon 5, and boy, was that troublesome...

But there are things not even the original version can change. As names. I remember the first time I heard Administrator V'Las I burst out laughing. Do you remember Sesame Street? There are two characters called Ernie and Bert. Well, in Spain, because it's for children, they called them Epi & Blas (even if these names aren't very common in Spain.) V'Las sounds exactly like Blas. So imagine my amusement the rest of the episode . I called his assistant, the Chief Investigator, Sepi.

The Japanese TPol and Hoshi are done by the same person, I think. The voices were way off.
But fortunately, we could also watch it in English. In the Netherlands Star Trek is subtitbled.
But when we went to Germany to visit a Star Trek thing, everything was in German. Was kind of funny to have Klingon (Kligonne in German) speaking German, but it felt... wrong. ST just has to be in English.

You don't have idea how much the Italian males' voices change from north to south (WELL! Females' voices, too! )

I was on vacation once and and Saw Star Trek Generations dubbed in French it was strange to hear other actors voices during that scene when Kirk and Picard were in that Horse back riding scene. Someone had used the tv remote the to change the language features from English to french.

They can't keep the name the same for an invented species? Actually, that sounds like something the French language purity board would do...

I think it is necessary because certain sounds or sound patterns don't "register" as real words in a language. It's like the name of that new Russian president. No matter how many times I hear it, it's like "what? I didn't catch that." And I remember a Dutch guy who we Americans called "Hueh" whose name in Dutch was pronounced like someone was clearing their throat. When I was in Thailand, I pronouced my (future) husband's name in a Thai-like way when referring to him. It was automatic. It made communication easier.
