I have Idea's for fics, need advice, moral support, whateve

Postby TSara » Wed Jun 13, 2007 6:40 pm

Ok so....

I've got several idea's floating through my mind and damn it I can't up my mind which one I should do first....or for that matter if I should even write them for fear that they may turn out to be rubbish! Confused

1) Isabelle Tucker a derivative of Elizabeth…..after baby Elizabeth Izzy’s mom decided that Isabelle might be less painful for the Tucker family.

Trip’s brother’s daughter (or somehow related to Trip) born in Florida (more than likely the Gulf Coast region since I grew up in that area) but at the request of a high ranking T’Pol, and Soval (who makes it happen) studied at the VSA. (Yes Trip is alive who do you think talked to T’Pol about pulling strings)

Member of Starfleet…..1st human to serve on a Vulcan vessel.

Spin off story of sorts….T’Pol and Trip will be involved BUT the story will mostly be about Izzy and her life with Vulcan’s.

2) One of Trip’s staff (a new addition to engineering haven’t thought of a good name for her yet)…..who lost a twin sister in the Embassy bombings…. How she deals with the aftermath…..the memorial……meets her sisters friends both human and Vulcan and learns how close her sister (named Mackenzie) was to them. Trip offer’s her advice as well on how to deal with it.

Instead of the 1st idea where Izzy this yet unnamed Character will be the first human that serves on a Vulcan vessel. T’Pau and Soval were apparently so impressed with her actions during the memorial and the following days they saw to it…..although I have yet to figure out how I am going to make this work without seeming too cheesy.

3) A Yesterday’s Enterprise spin off (yes RK I can hear your groans all the way here in Washington!) A story of what happened to the Crew not just Tasha after they ended up on Romulus.

Ok so that's it.

So I guess I'm looking for idea's on how to start this.....I'll also need a beta....someone who is patient and understanding, but at the same time not afraid to tell me if they think something should be changed.

Please all comments are welcome....just try to be somewhat gentle....I've never written one of these before.

If someone likes any of these Idea's and wants to co-author one with me that be great too.

I can offer moral support and proofreading. Very Happy I would also like to exchange ideas about a human studying at the VSA - and about living on Vulcan generally.

Pull your head out of your ass and start writing. That's the only advice that I can offer that actually works. Sit down and write. It will be shit. So what? Write it anyway. Keep writing. Write snippets of dialog. Write descriptions of places. Write character descriptions. Write background notes, like you did for this. Sit down and write up a summary of the story, just like you were telling it to someone over a campfire. Write, write, write.

The more you write, the better feel you will get for it. Keep putting words in a row. Nobody can teach you how to write. Nobody can tell you. It has to come from inside you. People can help you with grammar, and basic principles of dramatic gobbledegook. But the creative urge comes from deep down inside your growling belly. Belch it up girl, before it gives you permanent indigestion. Get it out and on paper where it belongs. Or on a screen, same thing. There is no substitute for putting words in a row.

Quit procrastinating. Write. You don't have to show it to anyone. You don't even have to keep the first few hundred tries, if you think they are really and truly too rank to be tolerated. Just

KEEP WRITING

until it starts to look halfway readable. Then find someone merciful and get them to savage it for you. But above all

I think both ideas are interesting.

I've always wondered what happened to Tasha Yar after that...

Well damn! Shock I've been putting off writing, but after that ass kicking, I guess I better get busy. I'm going to save this e-mail, Blackn'blue, and haul it out whenever I get unmotivated.

T'Sara, writing isn't easy. It can frustrate you when the words don't come and drive you crazy when you write yourself into a corner and can't figure out how to get out again. But in the final analysis, it does give you the satisfaction of creating something that is completely and uniquely yours. It's guaranteed to improve your grammar and your vocabulary, which will always come in handy. I'm afraid I'm going to have to agree with Rigil and BnB: just start writing.

can I get a hallelujah?

the first several story ideas i had were awful. the first fic i wrote was worse. yet, i kept them all, cause there were a few little pearls in there - the idea for 'Epiphany', T'Pol saying "cooties", Mirror Trip's 'Disease'. All of those came from the steaming pile labeled the 'crap' folder on my computer.

as justTrip'n can tell ya - my stories always start out rough. Big gaps in the story, poor word choice, and don't get me started on spelling and grammer. I just try to get it out - on paper or keyboard. Dump out the idea, then send it to someone who will be honest with you and point out all the gaping holes. Then you can sculpt it, mould it into something presentable in public. And then with each fic you write, you'll get better.

Go for it!

Thanks so much everyone. I needed that verbal (textual? ) ass kicking BNB.

I had started to write something this afternoon....but my laptop freaked out on me and I lost it.
Banghead

Oh well.....I remember the majority of it so I'll just write it when I get a chance tommarrow. Confused

I start out with a general idea of what I want to write -- and yes, I even have some things outlined -- but by the time I've got several chapters done, the story has mysteriously morphed into something quite different. I'm constantly jotting down notes on scraps of paper. About half of what finally shows up in my story are things I'd never envisioned when I started out. I guess it just takes my brain longer to work things out.

yep. I've got one of those "junk" folders on my computer too. I also have a list of stories I want to complete and a personal method of outlining (that may seem barbaric to some of the more organized writers here Wink ) so I can focus on the plot just a little.

Though, usually I like to let the characters take over and do whatever the hell they want anyway almost to the point where plotting becomes futile. Eventually they get back on track tho. Right now, I have a couple of characters ready to extract a Tucker hologram from a program by DL-ing him into a mobile emitter. That was not in my outline. But the buggers want to do it anyway because it's logical that they not sit around like teeka cats while some assmunch makes off with their baby.

Well, to specifically address your story ideas, T'Sara, my advice first would be to take special care that Izzy doesn't become a Mary Sue. Basically, she shouldn't be too perfect. Just Google "Mary Sue" if you don't know what I'm talking about.

You could always write the way I do. It's sort of the antithesis of Rigil's method. First, I close my eyes. Then I watch the movie playing inside my head. Then I open my eyes and describe what I saw. I try to do one scene every day. I read what I have before bed every night and go to bed thinking about it. Usually the next scene is in my head when I wake up. Repeat process daily until story is over. The End. Very Happy

As long as I can come out with an acceptable finished product it shouldn't matter what methods I use so Raspberry back at ya.

Here's a small tidbit that works for me:
To get into the story and characters, I like to start with something I can relate to. So the battle scene, for me, is not the first part I write. I might try the misadventure making dinner or something that I can easily write because I'm familiar with it. Then I insert the characters and see how they act in the situation. This warms me up with the characters I'm working with.
