Here's a link:
Etymology

Also... from HopefulRomantic's fic "Touching and Touched" we have this gem:

Lorian gestured to his fair hair, pointed ears, and startlingly blue eyes. “When I was born,” he continued, “my appearance was unique. Neither a human nor a Vulcan name seemed a proper fit. Then my father remembered a book...” — he turned to Catherine— “...that you read to him when he was a child. It was a fantasy written centuries ago, about a land of elves and wizards and enchantment.”

Catherine brightened as she realized. “The Lord of the Rings.”

“There was a magical forest,” Lorian continued, “into which evil could not enter...”

“The land of gold and dreams,” Trip said softly, remembering. “Lórien.” He smiled shyly at his son. “I thought of that?”

Lorian nodded. “I always considered your choice quite inspired.”

Trip’s smile widened giddily. “I’ll be damned.”

From Memory Alpha's entry on Lorian: "According to episode writer Mike Sussman, the name "Lorian" was an homage to the Elvish forest Lorien, found in J.R.R. Tolkien's novel Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Incidentally, there was also a character named "Lorien" on Babylon 5."

Apart from that, there is no canonical indication as to the origin of the name, although it is logical to assume that the Tolkien aspect may have played a part in TnT's decision to name him that. Alternately, "Lorian" could easily be a Vulcan name as well, perhaps even the name of T'Pol's father, and it's a happy coincidence that it has a Earth connotation as well.

I, too, am very desirous of the reading the sequel The first was so beautiful!
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

Related question (and answer).

Q: Why didn't they name Lorian "T'Rip"?

A:
SPOILER!!!:
"T'Rip" is a girl's name (according to Kevin)

Which also explains why T'Pol was so reluctant to call Trip by his nickname.

This whole discussion is fascinating to me. I wrote an epic-style fairy tale poem a few years back, inspired by the meaning of the names Calhoun ("Warrior), Brea ("Beauty Beyond Sight") and Twila ("Third"). I don't think I've ever had more fun writing something.

Anyway, I admit I never any of these details surrounding Lorian's name. I look forward to reading your interpretation of the bg story for it.
