Re: Abrams Trek
I like that the Spock they portrayed in the ST:2009 was more in touch with his Human side. I think Zachary Quinto did really well with it. Besides, a younger Spock is less likely to be so controlled (regarding emotions) as he has yet to get a real handle on them. I will admit that the Spock/Uhura scene was a bit much, but at the same time, it made Spock more likeable to me. The fact that of everyone, he opened himself up to her made sense in the grand scheme of things. And while I agree that McCoy should be played up more, I feel that the point of the movie was to focus on cementing Kirk and Spock's friendship. Kirk was already good friends with McCoy, so they didn't need to draw as much attention to that.

Re: Abrams Trek
I forgot to go to see this and it's not playing on our side of the river anymore. Sigh.
Bether, you and I never got this figured out, did we? My son liked it and insists I must see it. I'll haul ourselves over to Albany to see it before it's gone, I guess.
I'm guessing this isn't nearly as successful as the first one. That seemed like it played in theaters for a lot longer.

Re: Abrams Trek
Okay, the kid and I finally went (he insisted, but I did want to see it in the theaters before it was too late). He really loves it (for him, ST has always been about the ships). I liked it, but I didn't love it, and I have no desire to see it again.
It was fun to watch, especially the intro set piece, and I really love that they ended it at the beginning of a five year mission, but I'm getting more and more annoyed with the rest of it the more I think about it. The criticism you guys have posted here, which I could finally go read, is all pretty much spot-on (and very clever). Besides being not much more than a remix tape, as well as a hyper-frenetic space opera a la Star Wars, this movie reminded me of fanfic, complete with Spock/Uhura angst and Kirk/Marcus clearly being set up as well as that death scene that was so badly overdone that I was wondering if they were just trying to make the K/S slash crowd happy. I enjoyed the tiny little throwaway jokes more (like Christine Chapel being much happier on the outer reaches of space). I also really liked Uhura's scene with the Klingons.
Oh well. I just wish they'd hand this five year mission over to a TV series run by people who respect the original.

Re: Abrams Trek
That's sort of a scary proposition, considering the quality of new ensemble TV shows these days. I can just imagine the nighttime soap opera plot lines the 20-something never-saw-a-ST-episode-ever screenwriters would come up with.

Re: Abrams Trek
Well, the originals weren't exactly Masterpiece Theater either, but we enjoyed them (more or less). I'd just love to see them slow down and have a better batting average. Do 13 episodes a season and take more care with them, or do 22 but split the season into two sections for the pause that refreshes.
Speaking of soap opera, I was just watching the ever-more-complicated Defiance and realizing that there are just as many interesting female characters on that show as there are male ones. (And I do enjoy it.) Firefly had a pretty good balance, too. This was not true of any iteration of Star Trek I've ever seen. Not even Voyager.

Re: Abrams Trek
There's no way it's worse than that fifth Star Trek movie Shatner perpetrated, but yes, that's hysterical.

Re: Abrams Trek
Unfortunately, it is painful to me to say that personally I do not find anything to laugh about.

Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four
And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

Re: Abrams Trek
That honest trailer was terrific. Once again my decision not to go to the movies (been 20 years since I darkened the door of a theatre) appears to be correct. Star Trek belongs on the small screen.

RIP Tom, I will miss you, as will many others
Re: Abrams Trek
I'd argue that The Final Frontier, Insurrection, and Nemesis were all worse. Not by a whole lot, but there it is.

Re: Abrams Trek
No argument from me on those three. I'm wincing even now as I remember (well, those I can -- Nemesis never sticks, thankfully).

haha. I've seen that movie at least five times and I still can't remember anything that happens in it. How does that happen, anyway?

Re: Abrams Trek
It finally opened in Japan Friday. I'm going to go just because I love explosions on the large screen.
