Hah!

Seriously though, I think this falls under the category of super, super nitpicky.

I'd say if one has to find rationalization for that, blame Daniels.

Actually that kind of makes sense.
"Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."

Cool! Very cool, indeed. :vulcan: Even if this will NOT be my favorite ST movie, the fact that they made special effort to show it to a group of international astronauts on the space station makes me very happy. NASA has always been a hot bed of Trekkies since TOS days. Nimoy was pleasently surprised at the warm response to the original actors shown by NASA people and many people from the scientific community in the 60's, as he wrote in one of his books. And these guys on the space station like the positive hopeful attitude of ST. I am glad that comes across.
SPOILER!!!:
(Even though wiping Vulcan off the star charts is not a positive thing for me. :( )

From an Access Hollywood story

In a recent interview with MTV News, director J.J. Abrams said he’s open to bringing back both of these beloved “Trek” players [Kirk and Khan]. “The fun of this (new alternate ‘Trek’ reality) is that the destiny of these characters is in their hands — it’s not constrained by the pre-existing films or TV . . . series,” J.J. explained. “Believe me, whether it’s William Shatner or Khan … it would be ridiculous to not be open to those ideas.”

The “Trek” reboot established an alternate timeline, which allows Abrams and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman freedom to deviate from the established “Trek” history.

"One of the reasons we wanted to break with the original ‘Star Trek’ timeline was it felt restrictive,” he explained. “The idea, now that we are in an independent timeline, allows us to use any of the ingredients from the past — or come up with brand-new ones — to make potential stories.”

Access Hollywood, updated 5:20 p.m. ET, Mon., May 18, 2009

That's what I said! That the original timeline would be too restrictive for new writers coming to Star Trek. And that escaping the original timeline leads to fresh, more exciting stories.

Adding, “(Khan and Kirk) exist, and while their history may not be exactly as people are familiar with, I would argue that a person’s character is what it is … certain people are destined to cross paths and come together, and Khan is out there … even if he doesn’t have the same issues.” As for the inclusion of Shatner as an older Captain Kirk, which was considered for the reboot but ultimately nixed, Abrams told MTV News, “I wouldn’t rule out anything.” “The point of creating this independent timeline is to not have the restrictions we had coming into this one. And one of those restrictions was that Kirk was dead,” he explained.

But before fans get worked up in an intergalactic frenzy, the director cautioned: “But this all assumes that there’s another story that’s going to be told.” he noted. “We’re all still coming down from making this movie.”

Maybe I am just too old to transfer to a new timeline. Sigh! :dunno: I find a lot that is unfinished in the old timeline that I want to see brought to completion. But ANY Trek is better than NO Trek, so I am glad to see the movie succeed and take off in any direction that gives us fresh Trek because there will always be fan fiction and a group of people who will think along similar lines as me.

Really? I don't think so. And plenty of fans have been making their own stuff based off of it, so I don't see how anyone can make that argument.

Come to think about it, I had to move to an parallel universe for part of my E-squared saga, so Trip doesn't die when Lorian is 14 and anything can happen with regard to preventing or not preventing the Xindi attack on Earth, and even the Triannons (who destroy their world in a religious war) might be able to avoid this fate IF they play their cards right. I heard many times, when I suggested moving into the E-squared universe to tell a married Trip and T'Pol story: I like E-squared stories, but I don't. It's so depressing. We know it's going to end badly.

(Lorian's crew are all going to die or blink out of existence after failing in their mission.)

Or it could just be that the new writers are lazy and want to play in their own sandbox. And if that's the case one wonders why they even bothered to make it Star Trek. If they wanted something new, fresh and un-restrictive they could've created their own universe and characters, i.e. build their own sandbox instead of kicking over all the sand castles a lot of others built in a pre-existing one.

Frankly I see no real point in all this. Well, aside from Paramount making money, that is...

Have to say I agree with CX here. I see what they're going for, but in a way I think it's a sign of diminishing creativity. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm cool with AU fanfics. But these people are professionals. They're supposed to have a high bar. And I've seen fantastic in-universe fics from fanfic writers who aren't professionals.

They could put a new crew in the Gamma Quadrant post-Dominion War.

They could tell the story of the Romulan War.

They could explore the periods we haven't seen: humanity's first warp starship... maybe it only gets warp 1.2, or the infant years of the Federation, the era between TOS and TNG, etc.

They could have a final battle with the Borg, using the technology from the future Voyager. This would fit with their current emphasis on flashy space battles.

See? Options.

And they could say the Abomination is only a holographic creation of Ryker, then carry on the ENT story up through the creation of the Federation. That is the original ST universe story I'd like most to see in movie form or a mini series! Unfinished business should be taken care of first!
