Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
I stand by what I said above even if it makes long time fellow fans who I like and respect disagree with me. And I am sorry if I upset them. But we all have a right to our opinions and this conversation is depressing me and tiring me out since I have over extended myself and not felt very well for the last couple of weeks. So I think I will bow out of this thread for now.

Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
Yeah, Linda - I think this will be my last post here for a while. This thread is really depressing and I'm just to busy to want to deal with it.
As I said before - I enjoyed the movie and I also want to mention that it brought me back to Trek fandom. Since I left TriS before I pretty much believed that all things Star Trek sucked ass. I still do believe that, but I'm happy that it amused me for that hour and a half out of my weekend.
So, I'll catch you all next time I have something interesting to say...

Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
CoffeeCat I really appreciate your comments and I think if you look at the thread with the Poll about how much people like the movie, the fan's here disportionately give the movie HIGH marks. And there are many rave reviews. CX have you seen the movie yet? If you haven't, well . . . it's going to be hard for you to judge this movie because I can't even analyze WHY I love it so much. It was not the plot I love. I can barely follow the plot. It was the overall experience which had me gasping, and smiling, and wiping away sentimental tears. A recitation of the plot, or even a reading of the script will probably not produce that effect. Give the movie a chance before you trash it.
Also, you are doing a disporportionate amount of reviewing for someone who hasn't seen the movie and several people have mentioned it's getting depressiong. If someone, or many people are having fun, why rain on the parade? Please respect the fact that some people want to have fun with this. WHICH IS FINE, RIGHT???

You really ought to think of that, too.

Do I really have to remind you how often people said that about *the_abomination* before it aired but after the spoilers had come out? Or NEM, for that matter? Seeing it play out on screen isn't going to change how I feel about any of it - if anything it'll piss me off more about it the way actually seeing *the_abomination* did. And there are plenty of negative reviews from people who have seen the movie, too, one need only look. KTR gave one right here, and I shared the link to at least one other. In any case, I certainly don't see the same requirement from someone who's excited about the movie, and you should know by now how I feel about double standards.

Uh, excuse me, but I know what's in the movie, from reviews, spoilers, and people kind enough to share details when asked. As such, I have an informed opinion, and I share it because I have just as much a right to share my opinion on the movie as anyone else. I'm not being negative to "rain on the parade", I'm being negative because I don't like the movie and I feel compelled to say so when someone makes a comment in support of it (this being a discussion board, after all), especially if they make a comment that slights the old franchise in order to support the new movie.

Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
I guess I do have to make one more comment here. I resent any implication that I might be purposely "slighting the old franchise" if that is what you think I am doing. I absolutely LOVE the old franchise, and as I said I actually prefer it to the movie's new AU timeline. I don't feel I am slighting the RU in any way. But I also like the new movie too and after all, the old franchise is full of AUs so what is so new about this one? I don't see it as wiping out the old RU timeline but just branching off from it. I suppose it is all a matter of interpretion but I guess I do feel slighted myself if someone rebukes my opinion with such emotion and word choice. Well, maybe I should "get a life" and not respond so emotionally too.

But if you "got a life" you wouldn't be here and that would be tragic because you're the Vulcan expert. So no getting a life ok....

Anytime. Yeah honestly you can't get a life, what if some poor sap (like me) needs some Vulcan info and google doesn't help? Then what? Nope you can't get a life. Not fair to the rest of the nut house.

Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
OK here is the official warning: [
I like how KTR interacts because he presents an opinion and then he also listens to others present an opinion. I am not against negative reviews per se.
We are all here to ENJOY Star Trek. Coffee Cat is right: We fans all like different parts of Star Trek. So it is respectful not to try to talk others out of enjoying something they enjoy. There is a warning up at Triaxian Silk and a warning up at HoT to be understanding of other fans who may be into other parts of Star Trek than you. If this biases the discussion somewhat towards favorable reviews by cutting off endless repeats of extremely negative opinions of particular Star Trek characters, series, books, movies, . . . then so be it. We are here to have FUN.

Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
Here's what I want to know:
SPOILER!!!:
The robo-cop. Are those just for routine stuff like traffic patrols? Seems to me you'd still need good old fashioned humans for a lot of stuff, like detectives. Because these can't be like Data, after all.

Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
Obviously humans are required for the heavy mental lifting but if it's just "Catch criminal, read rights" yeah, robot police men might make sense. They don't take breaks, they don't get old or tired, they don't rough up a suspect when they get angry. Hopefully they don't give the damn things guns, though.

But you haven't seen the movie, that's not an 'informed opinion' at all, it's actually the exact opposite of an informed opinion.
I know the plot of Il trovatore, I'm aware Giuseppe Verdi wrote it and that it's considered a triumph of Italian opera. I know it's been performed hundreds of times since it premiered in 1853. Hell, I could even type in some stuff in Wikipedia and tell you that the first person to play Count di Luna was Giovanni Guicciardi. But I've never actually seen it. By your definition, I'm informed enough in the play to claim that Verdi was actually a hack who couldn't write a note.
The truth is when it comes to film, television, and theater, there is no such thing as informed until it's consumed.
I hate "These are the Voyages", but that's because I actually SAW These are the Voyages. I sat down and fucking watched it and it lived up to the hype and it was bad. Not as bad as I thought but bad.
I hated on this film going in, dropped all kinds of snow, and I regret that. It was good and it changed my mind. Was it the best thing ever? No. Was it terrible? No. It was okay and I'm glad I saw it.

It's absolutely necessary I write a sequel of "Honeymoon Evening"
T'Pol must see "Il Trovatore"!

Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four
And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

??? I just thought that was a cop with a really high-tech helmet. The 23rd century equivalent of mirror glasses/motorcycle helmet...
It was creepy as hell, though.
OMG, ANOTHER new chapter! NORTH STAR Chapter 28

Re: Star Trek: the new movie.
I saw *the_abomination* for the very same reasons. I knew it would be bad, but I wanted to have all of the facts not biased opinions before forming my own. You know what, IT WAS BAD. But I also laughed in places, and I liked seeing and hearing from old favorite characters not because they were in the episode but because I liked them.I can't say I like or dislike the movie I haven't seen it yet. BUT I can say I'm 50% concerned, and 50% excited. If nothing else I get to drool over Eric Bana, special effects and costumes. And hey I'm OK with that.
