Logging in... ad nauseum

Postby Distracted » Thu Apr 17, 2008 10:18 pm

So... why is it lately that I've got to log in every single time I visit the board? Is this some new thing for security or something?

Nothing has changed for me. When you log in is the "Log me on automatically each visit" box checked?

What JZ said. I just looked in the user control panel and I don't see anything that does it there.

So does anyone actually have foes they manage? What a concept.

I have the same problem, and I always check the "Log me on automatically each visit" box. What I've noticed is that I stay logged in for the day, but every time the date changes, I have to log in again and again.

Mine's not even for the day. For the past week or so it's been every time. It wasn't like that before, and I always check the "Log in automatically" box.

Have you disabled cookies on your computer recently?

I didn't do any change, didn't disable cookies, and now, like Distracted, I have to log on every time I visit. :(

The only things I know how to do with cookies are to bake them and eat them. I wouldn't have a clue how to disable them. 8)

Erm... Don't know, it works for me.

Sometimes the computer, that nasty instrument of devil, does it without our consent (or at least, mine does.)

If you recently had an update to your spam blocker or your privacy settings or your virus software and it prompted you to do something that seemed completely innocuous so you said yes, that might have done it. I would check your settings on that stuff first.

Otherwise it's a matter of going into your control settings for Internet and seeing if "disable cookies" is checked, then unchecking it and saving the change. Or something like that.

Cookies are little files that a web site deposits on your computer so that it recognizes you. (I think -- I'm no expert.) Some people think this is a conspiracy to steal vital personal information from them. Who knows, maybe it is, but life online without cookies is really tedious.

I can't believe I'm pretending I know any of this stuff. Somebody who REALLY knows, please feel free to weigh in.

 That's how I feel when I try and explain a lot of ordinary computer stuff to my frustrated 72-year old dad. Like how can I explain why you have to go to a START menu to SHUT OFF your computer! :?
