It's Official--I Am Old...

Postby leslina » Mon Nov 24, 2008 6:28 pm

I brought my laptop to school today to show my classes some video clips. My desktop image is a TnT fan art. Several kids thought it was anime, a couple recognized it as Star Trek and then it happened. One of my students asked, "What's Star Trek?"

Ah... I see your problem... you have confused your thinking that they don't know about Star Trek because it was ages ago with the fact that they are just so self absorbed and immature that they haven't moved past Teletubbies.

Star Trek is a global phenomenon... you could probably walk into a third world village where they would say "Whats e-lek-tri-sit-i?" but they would probably have heard of James T. Kirk.

Teenagers on the other hand are to self absorbed and dumb to realise that there is something past online gaming and the Internet.

Show them a book and watch them go nuts in amazement!

Ah, you're old, leslina aren't you?
Damn! So, what the hell am I?
But don't worry: time passes for everyone.
Nevertheless Star Trek there will be yet.
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

My sister reports that five years ago at the the school where she was teaching one of her students pointed to an old-fashioned phone with a rotary dial and said, "what's that?"

LOL! My grandma had one in her office bedroom of my grandparents' home in Phoenix... When my grandfather died and she moved out of that home, my mom sort of took a look at their finances and found out they'd been paying AT&T some special fee for this phone... for 35 years.

Anyway, I think the youngins of this world will know what Star Trek is soon enough, vis-a-vis Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana.

Sorry Asso, ::snerk:: I was having a moment. One kid did say, "Hey, there's a movie coming out." So, yeah, there is some awareness. But that one... well, I keep my honest thoughts about her to myself. Don't need to give those of us in my profession a bad rap. But oy. :?

I second this. You must post stories on fanfic.net if only so you can look at your monthly hits by country and get to see that people all over the world have visited your Trip and T'Pol crap (well, yours isn't crap but I confess that's how I think of mine if only in a pathetic attempt not to waste more energy on it than I already do). Here they are in order of volume for my stuff in November (mostly Cmdr Tucker Proposes): US, Canada, UK, Germany, Australia, Italy, France, Finland, Jamaica, Hong Kong, Austria, Sweden, <Unnamed ?>, Russia, Pakistan, Netherlands, Crotia, Malaysia, Denmark, Belgium, India, Spain, Czhech Revar, Brazil, Poland, Singapore, Portugal, New Zealand, Ireland, Israel, Estonia, Switzerland, Romania, Greece, Hungary and Panama. Meanwhile I got maybe six or so people leaving reviews on that site (and may the Great Bird of the Galaxy bless these kind souls with long life and happy reading). So it's very cool to see this evidence that you're actually getting read around the globe and not just by your parents and your pals at TS. 8)

Can you see how many have read the story in a specific country?

You see how many discrete visitors you had and how many page hits (visitors matter more than hits). You don't know how many read all the way to the end.

I don't know why, I just find it thrilling to know I had 11 readers in Jamaica...
