What is your favorite SF book?

Just what it says on the tin.

I like the way your mind works. More. Vulcans. (Pleeeease) I've been looking for some time for material on my favorite imaginary culture, and it's pretty thin on the ground. Time to Make Stuff Up.

And: have you read the Lindsey Davis stories? Roman mysteries featuring Marcus Didius Falco, a Roman P.I. Great stuff.

Just re-read The Chrysalids, which as I said to Priso, makes the Day of the Triffids seem like the phone book. Both great books by John Wyndham, but the Chrysalids is just soooo good and should be required reading for anyone trying for themselves to write characters sharing a mental bond that no one else can see.

Yup, read all the Didius Falco stories. And there is an author whose name begins with an "S" who also writes mysteries set in ancient Rome. Darn, can't remember his name because I sent all those books on to my mother. Was "Three Hands in the Fountain" a Falco mystery? That was my favorite because it discussed some technical stuff about the acqueducts in Rome.

More Vulcans, Yeeees! More Vulcans, Yeees pleeease! Let's both write more stories about them. Love BnB's Vulcans. Love taking minor canon Vulcans and rounding out their personalities and back stories.
Working on a major fan fic project. Two-thirds done. Hope to put it up in the not TOO distant future.

I Googled "ancient rome mysteries author" and "Steve Saylor" came up. Is that him?

Yup, Saylor's the one. Three Hands in the Fountain is a Falco story, though. And there's a new author on the horizon - Ruth Downie who writes about a Roman army surgeon. Medicus is the title. I have a reserve on it, but there are 62 people ahead of me. Dang.

Cool, guys. A couple more ancient Rome novel leads! Yes, Saylor was the other author I have read. Somehow those togas remind me a bit of Vulcan robes. And their engineering skills were great. Could do without those blood sports though. Ah well, every civilization has its weird stuff.

"62 people ahead of me. dang."

If it was 2 or 6, I'd wait, but it's 62. Everyone from seven onwards is insane.

Here's the amazon page.

The mention of the late John M. Ford on another thread makes me think of this one: The Last Hot Time. Casting Fortune is another favorite of mine. I think I have all the Liavek books.
