Walked off a cliff, eh? :wtf: Well, they aren't exactly the brightest critters on God's green Earth... I'm actually surprised the thing survived the fall long enough to be put down.

Nope. The closest they come to intelligence is knowing that when you;re fixing fence that they might be able to get out.

Yeah, she was in the news a few days ago, poor cow. She was an escapee from a local breeder's farm. Cows aren't bright but they are wilful. I never heard of one walking off a cliff before.

And did you see the 'related articles' below the cow article in that link? The one about the flaming squirrel blowing up the car?

And about cows walking off cliffs because they are not too bright. Humans have walked off cliffs... And I will bet Vulcans have too. Hey, this could be a start of another story.

I'm guessing the cow was spooked by something. Otherwise I doubt your average cow would just walk off a cliff.

Spooked, probably. No creature would knowingly walk off a cliff - except for Humans trying to end their lives. Does that make cows brighter then Humans? :? Could be.

But cows are not that bright from what I have seen. A few years ago, a friend with a dairy farm told me her horse would stand in the barn doorway when the cows wanted to come in, on purpose, seemingly to frustrate the cows. Now maybe the cows just stood there because they were being polite? Or did it just not occur to them to try to head butt the horse out of the way, LOL.

Horses are pretty dumb animals too, but they're generally smarter than cows, plus they won't strain a fence to see if they can get out. The fence would either have to be laying on the ground, or so bad that it falls over if they lean on it for them to ever be out of the pasture. And when they get spooked and run, if they see something on the ground, liek say a person, they will try their hardest to not step on them. They don't always succeed, but they try. Cows, on the other hand, don't care, and will flatten anything that's in their way, including structures if they aren't sturdy enough.

heh... My horse could open her stall door and let herself and the other horses out.

I did not teach her this....she just up and one day did it. It shocked me.

Had to start putting pad locks on the stalls to keep her from doing it. :?

Straining fences....not normally...but they will do so if they are alone and they want to be around other horses. Most of the time though they don't even bother and will jump it.

The stepping on thing though is true. *nods*

Animals are strange beasts though. :?

I just read a story on msn.com about a surfer who was attacked by a shark and dolphins saved him. Dolphins are really smart animals. A lot of animals are smarter than one might assume at first, though. Except maybe fish. But my roommate and I got a betta fish freshman year in college, and we were quite fond of him. Actually, my roommate didn't want to get another fish because I got so emotionally attached to Horatio and most fish don't live so long (we had him for a year and a half, longer than any of his other dorm fish peers.)

Dolphins are some of the few animals to pass the mirror test.
