The other day my newspaper actually had a small article about fan fiction (see here; it's in Swedish). Apparently the local University College is going to make a study about the subject.

I think they got some assumptions wrong though. It says fan fiction is something young people do, and that the readers can interact with and influence the outcome. From my experience, fan fiction is practiced by all ages and it's the writers who determine the outcome. Sure we talk about stories on boards like this, but it is the writers who decide.

Guess you better set them straight then. I'll even let you point them at my Foundations series as an example. ;)

Well, they might be right in a way. They may only study Swedish fan fiction (as in written in Swedish) and that may be mostly by young people. I wouldn't know. I haven't seen or looked for fan fiction in Swedish.

But if you want a bigger audience you should probably write in English.

Might also depend on the genre. Gaming fanfiction, versus tv series fanfiction versus movie fanfiction, versus etc.
"When the legends die, the dreams end. When the dreams end, there is no more greatness."

"It is better to be a live jackal than a dead lion."
--King Solomon the Wise
"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." Unless the few are armed.

Holy shit!
In this case or I am young (Well, maybe it's just so! Mh… No. I am NOT young. :( ) or I am an exception (and I believe NOT! :D )

Kevin Thomas Riley wrote:...and that the readers can interact with and influence the outcome.

Perhaps somewhat, I think.
Maybe it's worth thinking over that.

And I think blacknblue is right.
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

Hey, I am not a 'spring chicken' myself. I will be retiring from my IT job (which I have been doing for 29 years), in about 3 to 5 more years. And I started that job at age 30. I will let you guys do the math, if you care to. I know several other fanfic writers in my age range, but I will let them reveal their ages if they want, because I won't "tell" on them. Yes, from what I can see, fanfic writers and readers come in all ages, sexes, races, (species?), political orientations, etc. Its a kind of IDIC community!
Working on a major fan fic project. Two-thirds done. Hope to put it up in the not TOO distant future.

Well you should tell them anyway. If there's one thing that fan fiction doesn't need, it's another condescending "study" making us all out to be a bunch of teenagers who can barely put two sentences together.

Well, from the article it didn't get the impression that it was going to be a condescending study.

Still, they probably ought to be informed about the facts.

I don't. I wouldn't go through that again, even without the pimples.

CX is right about the idea some people have of fanfic writers as a bunch of teenagers who can't really write. I've never claimed to be the world's best writer, but I'm not some entirely unskilled teenager girl who writes Mary Sues where I beat out T'pol for Tripp's affections, can cure more ailments than Doctor Flox, and earn the love of the crew from John Archer to Pothos.

Edit: As a disclaimer, I'm not trying to bash everyone who ever spells a word incorrectly or has a typo. It happens. But I firmly believe that if one is going to be posting works of fanfiction the characters' names should be spelled correctly. This is not Elizabethan England, where Raleigh himself spelled his name different ways and nobody thought it odd. Just a fanfic pet peeve of mine.
