It looks like there's a rock and mortar retaining wall on the right side of the waterfall that goes all the way down to the river. It's a clever way to prevent erosion. Looks old, too. You can see the top of it in the picture with Bugboy in it. Am I right, putaro?

I'm really not a camping person. Cheap hotels I'm OK with, but camping... nope. My sister is the complete opposite. She went campinmg with her man and one-year old son for five weeks this summer. Gah! I wouldn't survive five days...

The drop-off is definitely on a man-made wall. Every place I've ever been in Japan has been "improved" with erosion control structures. I think it must have been a natural drop off originally because there would have been a lot of earth moving to turn gradual descent into a drop off but you never know. There was another drop-off half a kilometer further down the river. Traditionally, the Japanese government "stimulated" the economy by paying for all kinds of construction projects.

The reason I like going camping is to get away from people - going to a campground like this doesn't do that, that's for sure! I used to do a lot of off-roading east of San Diego. You can go out into the desert and find a place to camp where there's no one around. Good fun and NO BUGS!
