Re: The Happy News thread

I have MY dream life!

Today, Priso went down and milked over a litre of fresh goat milk. Puzzle's looking around his universe (a barn stall) atop his wobbly legs. I'm gonna pasteurize the milk in our double-boiler. Raw milk's got its fans out there, but with little kids, I don't want any Listeriosis or e.coli or anything getting into their cereal. But once heated to a specific temp for a specific time, and sealed in sterile mason jars, you've got 2 weeks to drink it. It actually tastes very mild, almost exactly like the cow's milk in our cartons. nothing like the goaty taste of goat cheese.
My city girl met my country girl in an internal battle today as I looked at the mug of fresh, just-squirted goat milk Priso held up for me in the kitchen. I took a sip hesitantly and though it tasted absolutely normal and fine, I almost couldn't swallow it, as if I had a mouthful of goat pee instead of milk. These animals are clean and healthy, but they're still GROSS and hairy and pee-y and poopy and what have you, and I have seen their gross side for these past several months, and now I'm gonna squirt this stuff outta their dirty phallic teat and, what?? - DRINK IT????? It SO goes against the grain. I laughed, looking at the mason jars next to the plastic cartons of cow's milk in the fridge and I said "I know both containers of milk came from gross farm animals, and yet, the one in the plastic just looks so...so......so.....not farmy. I don't know. I can drink litres of cow's milk in a day, and yet that one sip of fresh goat milk made me want to psychologically barf a little. No GOOD reason, but still powerful.

It's actually weirder that it IS weird. Like Jacob said about being human in the 1st part of Breaking Dawn. (Did I just type that out loud??

It's weirder that I know the exact line you're talking about. That it felt weird to be in human clothes, and that it was WEIRD that it FELT weird... because he ditched and ran off screaming like a little girl with a skinned knee at the end of Eclipse

Anywho, I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU GUYS! I AM ONE OF THOSE OLD HoT'ers WHO REMEMBERS THE PLIGHT OF OUR CANADIAN COUSINS TO OWN THEIR OWN LITTLE COUNTRY PLACE WITH GOATS!
So. Now that you have this survival ranch out there in the Canadian highlands... Probably a good 200 miles from any popular primary targets of any potential nuclear powers

Count us in. We'll provide medical care and share hunting duties. And the swords. We have swords, bows, arrows, throwing knives, hatchets, pikes, polearms and pickaxes. Take yer pick.

. Should I make my way up there with my arsenal if TSHTF?

I have this mental pic of Elessar patiently trying to explain aforementioned arsenal to jarhead Canadian/US border-guards.

Our fearless pacifist gun-toting leader is certainly a study in opposites.

D, have you or your hubby read a book called "Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse?" because you guys remind me SO much of a couple in that book

lol there wouldn't be jarheads at the border, but I take your point

They DO say you can just sail across one of the great lakes with no customs inspections... I could boat my guns over

My sister can't even send me rasberry cordial soda from Canada if Elessar can get his arsenal there I'm going to be mad at my sister.

But that's what we have Linda for! Doesn't she have a boat in Lake Michigan?
No, Elessar. We haven't read that non-fiction book, but we are enjoying the Novels of the Change by S. M. Stirling. I think you'd like them. One of the surviving communities speaks Elvish.

Re: The Happy News thread
So, today I finished all my prep for Monday classes PLUS three scholarly abstracts. Hopefully, one of them will get me to London this spring on my University's dime.
Now this evening and tomorrow can all be for fun writing and other ways of goofing off.

Re: The Happy News thread
Good for you!
I spent the last two days forcing my son (who was out of school most of last week as the older kids took their Regents exams) to help me clean out eight years of accumulated crap in his bedroom and clean it top to bottom.
Now I have to do all the school work I ignored (and vacuum the heck out of our room, since my technique is to dump everything there while we clean and then force him to decide what can go back in his room or to the garbage, the thrift store, other kids in the family, or the basement).
The choices are so interesting to watch. He happily let go of his teddy bear but couldn't part with his stuffed killer whales, though he did agree to put them in a chest. Most of the toys went to other kids or the basement, but some he insisted he still played with. And I knew better than to even ask him about the balled up paper on his bed stead that has the lyrics of a song with his name as the title -- which was given to him by a girl he likes. Apparently he felt the need to dramatically ball it up in front of her because he hates that Lady Gaga song, but he nonetheless carefully brought it home to keep as a sacred token of her interest.
