Alelou, she was just doing what was done in the times. children had no rights. rules were rules and to be followed. I suppose there were school systems that might have wondered about a student who could read at such a level at such a young age. But probably rare.

Incident to show what I mean: School Cafeteria, going through line, something did not want. so I say No I don't want that. Server grabs my tray , plops a gob of the stuff on it and says "eat it." I go to table eat what I want and leave the glop. I get nailed on the way to put tray in to the place where they are cleaned and washed. "You have not eaten everything on your tray." Didn't ask for it and don't want it." You have to eat it." Then comes a test of wills. I am sat down and told "eat it." I sit there, bell rings to start classes. Teacher finally recues me as it is more important that I go to class. Note sent to where I lived that I took somethhing and then did not eat it. Nothing said about not asking for it or wanting it. I was in the wrong. NO rights. I was defyijng adults. First the server, then the teacher who made me sit at the table. Children did not do that. Rules are rules. Child does what the child is told by an adult, period.

Addenum: I was thinking of something. In those days a fil could be shown in school of Africa. the tribes of Africa. Bare Breasted African females. Okay for kids to see. Why? because they are black. A bare Breasted White female could not be shown. Wrap your head around that one. Black, bare breasts can be shown, White NO. Breasts are the same contour, nipple at the tip. Everything except the color of the woman. Strange.

Here's to universal poltical correctness....

Happy news? I surived through 11 hours of an internship today... for which I had to drive an hour each way to get to... for the third day in a row. Like the first two days, it included 6 hours of video that was older than I am and as boring as anything. Sounds terrible, I know, but not only should I have a job (at last) by the end of the month, but it gave me time to flush out an outline for the next chapter of my ENT story... so it all worked out...

So THAT'S why my brother liked National Geographic magazine so much when we were kids. Who'da thunk?

I would guess that the reading level rule was intended to protect younger readers from inappropriate content. I remember at seven getting hold of a nursing textbook. Very eye opening experience. Saved my mom from having to talk about birds and bees, though. I showed her the page, asked, "Mama, is that true?" She looked at it, choked a little, looked back up at me and said, "Yes". The talk was done. Oh, and I think she did ask me where I got the book. My best friend's mother was a nurse and I'd filched it from their house without asking. I gave it back eventually. 8)

In appropriate Content in a school Library? You must be kiding. NOt in those days. Magazines in te Library were "boy's Life," "Liberty," Saturday Evening Post," Raders digest," "Look," "Life"
No medicat text or magazines. I guess thee may have been "Popular Mechanics" too.

Girls wore dresses or skirts, period. No jeans, trousers, or pants of any kind. Female clothes orelse. Girls played Jacks, skip rope or one other game which was very populat but he name I cannot remeber. gierls did NOT play Baseball, Football, Basketball. Nothing inappropriate. so, no the Library wold be as clean as a hounds tooth.

Addenum. there was a Radio Program titled "You are there" It took historical events like the signing of the Magna Carta, Lee's surrender at appomatix, the battle between the Monitor and the merrimac and other famous events. The would have radio intervieweres intrviewing Lee and Grant. King Jong and some of te Barons, etc. It made History Live. Wonderful radio Program which was broadcast commercial free. Teachers would bring table model Radios in to classrooms so students could listen to the weeks program. It made me want to learn more of those events. At the end of the prgram the anoucer would say "all events are as they happened except you are there."

We actually had a librarian like that in middle school. One day she famously shouted at a student, "Library's are NOT for reading in!" (I'm unclear what she thought libraries were for.) She was always on the look out for people she didn't think belonged in the library, accusing them of sinister motives for being there, and shoeing them out. Like, "I don't believe YOU really want to read THAT book. Stop pretending you care. I'm not fooled! Get out!" She would shout this at a totally baffled student whose hair was too long or something.

When I was a high school teacher our librarian didn't want to order any of the paperbacks by S.E. Hinton or whatever that the kids were mad for because, she said, they would get stolen. So she'd only order books they didn't like to read.

So I had to keep my own library in my classroom. Because, of course, young teachers have so much extra cash to spare. And no, I can't remember any getting stolen.

Sounds like my librarian but she was probably right. The library was prime chick-cruising territory 8) . Then again, I mastered the art of appearing to be the perfect kid by like age 10 8)

Happy news? I'm back to "passing grade territory" in Design Workshop. Although I hadn't strayed too far this semester, it's definitely been tougher, and today I got my first official passing grade on this project...

Who thought designing a spa could be this stressful? Why am I studying architecture again?

We're getting the oil re-piped from our tank to our boiler above ground in the basement (instead of under the foundation -- the better to keep an eye on any potential leaks), which meant I had to get all the walls between those two items cleared out yesterday -- which meant I organized and cleaned the whole working half of the basement.

I'm so proud of myself! 8)

Plus I found a whole ton of stuff I'd 'lost' in the process.

And now the only problem will be getting rid of all the trash and donations.

Yeah! Alelou.

My happy news. I went out last night to a members night at our observatory and was a Light Leach. (I didn't bring my own scope, just looked through other people's.) I saw many objects I'd never seen before, including the Turtle Nebula and the W Star Cluster, as well as many globular clusters. Here is a nice globular cluster I have seen many times, including last night: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap050627.html. The Milky Way was beautiful from Mingo Creek Park Observatory hill. I feel refreshed. :D And I want a new telescope:

I need an Orion Intelliscope. OMG, the Build-A-Scopes are cheap!!!

Sounds really great, justTripn. My daugther is very interested in astronomy. I would like to take her to an observatory one day.
