Re: The Whine thread.
If this is a work computer don't hey have the right to block anything they want? I can see it being annoying because of a dull job (been there done that) but if some co-workers have been looking at porn it doesn't seem an unreasonable course of action. Now if they don't let you play solitaire, then I can see that as oppressive.

Some of these people haven't taken their medication. Let's see what happens now...

As T'Poptarts explained the situation, yes, it was the work computer that was getting abused. However, people live there, and the wireless access is also for the residents, who use their own computers...which they should be able to look at whatever they want with. Instead of Net Nannying the one computer that's for official use, they cut everyone off from ANYTHING that could "potentially" be offensive...so if you want to watch that latest cute cat video on YouTube that went viral, you can't, because you might go there to look at something offensive.

Re: The Whine thread.
Thanks for the clarification. Well I suppose that is extreme, isn't there a way to cut off only certain computers, even on a network like that?

Yes. Unfortunately they are either too lazy, don't have the techie know-how, or do not want to pay an expert to make it happen, it seems. I know it can be done in theory, since this is what my ex did for a living, but I wouldn't know the first thing about how to go about it. My solution would be to install Net Nanny or something like that on the computer in question if I didn't know how to go about it from a networking standpoint...though that costs money...though I'm sure there are freeware programs out there that do the same thing. Unfortunately, people are often under the misconception that free programs aren't any good, and that's just not the case.

Still I can totally understand why they were upset about it. Even if I don't agree with the solution.

Re: The Whine thread.
Nobody is arguing that, and even T'Poptarts agreed that it was wrong in her initial post.
New whine: second job called last night and said they didn't need any temps today. Good news: day off. Bad news: no money.

Didn't say anyone was arguing about that. Just making an observation. Sorry about the lost pay, the economy's crazy. But it took a long time to tank so it will be a long time to fix. Controversial politics aside, even if everyone did agree a big mess takes time to clean.

Duh, it's blocked too.

And the wi-fi is like a totally different network not the same one in the office, the office network is cable it's not even wi-fi, so like I don't get why they'd block everything on the wi-fi which is basically for people's personal computers not for work or anything.

Well at least Photobucket seems to be working again... for now anyway

Now THAT is very wrong! If the office network is not connected to the personal network then they should have left it completely alone. Maybe you should get the other tenents to gather together to complain to management, perhaps a petition would help. It's not fair to penelize innocent people for the guilty's transgressions, no matter how serious they are.

^ Considering what I know from her previous stories about that place, I don't think management gives a hoot.
How's the hair-cutting business?
Underemployment is a double-edged sword, hmm? I feel you there. This week I was only scheduled 15 hours. (But I picked up 10 hours of other peoples' unwanted shifts, so that's good.) You have time and could do fun things... if you could afford said fun things.Aquarius wrote:New whine: second job called last night and said they didn't need any temps today. Good news: day off. No Enterprise on Monday the 13th. That doesn't bode well for the rest of the week...or the rest of the re-launched SyFy's schedule.

If it makes you feel any better, their new name is an STD.

How so? I see STD's every day, and SyFy isn't one I've heard of. Is it a new street abbreviation for something I probably need to know?

Meh. I've heard it called Lues and Syphilis, but never SyFy. I guess it looks similar, though, come to think of it. I guess that must be what he's talking about. So.... if we watch it will we all need penicillin?
