It almost seems as if he wants to undermine and demoralize you to the point you can't succeed at anything for the ulterior purpose of keeping you around to do his shit for him/take his abuse.

He probably started supporting himself at 17 because his parents were even worse and he's probably very angry about it still.

Aquarius wrote:My whine: this looking for a job thing SUCKS!! :banghead: There has GOT to be a way to find something closer to home. This commute is eating my life, and with school about to start, I'm looking at it as 2 hours a day that I don't get to do homework...or read fics...or write... :(

Okay I think I'm just gonna go off and cry someplace now.

I can sympathize. For about eight months (ten years ago now) I had a hour-and-a-half-one-way commute to work. I got up at 5:30am to get out the door in time (and be awake enough to drive) to make to work by 8:00am. I'd get off around 6:00pm and would be home by no earlier than 8:00pm because I had to stop to fill up the tank EVERY DAY. (There's no way that would be economically feasible now, even on the salary I had.) I had an hour to do everything else I needed to do before I had to get some sleep. For those eight months it felt like I ate, slept, drove to work, worked and did nothing else. :-(

Of course, once I got a new place within walking distance of work it made me appreciate all the time I suddenly had even more. Good luck finding a job closer to home! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Thanks, EntAllat! I called that place that I interviewed at before the con. She said she was gonna call me and she never did. I've called several times but this was the first time I managed to get her on the phone. She said she still hasn't filled the position yet and she was still thinking about it, so I'm not out of the running. I let her know that I'm very interested, and she said she'd decide in a week or two. It's literally only a mile, mile and a half from where I'm living now. And I have the added bonus of her not always needing me on Tuesdays, which means more homework prep time between Monday and Wednesday.

Keep your fingers crossed!

It sounds like that lady is a little flaky - so I'd "think about it" too - and certainly look around for other nearby salons.

On the other hand, working at a salon means working closely with everyone there, so maybe its not a bad thing that she wants to be sure you're a good fit. Also, you never know what's in someone's head, either. She might just not want to make a decision for reasons that have nothing at all to do with you.

I've got my fingers crossed for you!

She and her boyfriend just bought this salon a little over six months ago, and I got the impression that this is the first business she's owned. Unless you've been in management before, it's sort of hard to know "how" to interview and hire a person. So, I can respect the fact that she's taking her time and not hiring the first thing that answers the ad. While inexperienced, she seems smart enough to be looking for someone who's a "good fit" into the existing dynamic, vs. risking hiring a square peg and trying to shove her into a round hole. She's got the right idea, she's just not sure what to do with it yet.

Any way, I've been making some more calls between posting here. One lady took my number to call me in the future because she might need help. Another is hiring for sure and is going to call me back before 7pm. That one's a chain salon, one of those cheap, quickie a-la-carte places like my second job is now, but I figure it's a place to start in the area, and if I don't like it I can keep looking. In the meantime it'll give me a chance to develop a following and a paycheck, and get me some local street cred. Plus I worked for this company a looooooooong time ago, and in the grand scheme of things, they weren't as psycho as a lot of these types of places are.

LOL! Thanks. I've got a few more call-backs coming, and Sally Beauty Supply wants to talk to me, so things are looking brighter than when I started today. I won't be behind a chair at Sally's, but at this stage of things I'm kind of okay with that, if it'll save me time on the commute.

If I could I'd pay you to do something with my mop. But then I don't have a dime right now myself. Not one. :( The government won't even let me look for a job. If I do they take my medicade. I need my medicade...

Hope you find a nice job close to home soon. Yesterday my hubs found a temporary part time job, which made him very happy. BTW, please post more, Aquarius, because my three year old son likes your avatar ;-) - I think mostly because of the picture of "people kissing in the tub" as he calls it.  Don't ask me, he has his own logic.

Little whine: the last week we had some tropical weather - hours and hours of heavy rain fall. It surprised me twice, resulting in wet clothing. Any way, three days ago I started to have this terrible headeache, my right eye started to hurt, I got a cold and yesterday I worked in a sort of haze. Plus I had a very lovely "I have a cold" voice. I had a colleague on the phone who called out that I sounded terrible and should go home and to bed. I got home early, feeling cold and miserable. It's official: I have a cold. So now my daughter is at school, hubs away to talk about his new job and I am feeling sick at home, with my son, who is his usual happy and busy self, trying to write a whine.

Hope you feel better soon. Too bad your lovely son with the great taste in kissing couples isn't in school yet so you could totally rest.

I'm hoping that my stepdaughter's lovely new (old) house less than a mile from the coast of NJ doesn't get blown or storm-surged too hard by Earl ... or Fiona ... or Gaston... I sent her an email yesterday about how she might want to get started putting away some of the (many) loose items in their yard and taking the canvas cover off their gazebo before the storm arrives, not to mention heading for Grandma's if they have to evacuate, and she said "What storm?"

Question for all you college professor types:

It's Saturday. Class starts Wednesday. So why in the hell wouldn't you have your orders in for books at the campus area bookstores yet??? Y'all say that you want us to be prepared for class...yet not being able to purchase my books a mere four days before class makes this a little difficult. Crazy as it sounds, some of us *want* to come to class prepared.

So, my question for those of you in the know is...WTF??? :wtf: :banghead: :bitch:

Sorry. May not be a big deal to some people. But I live an hour away from campus, and my schedule is jam packed full, so some of us just don't know when the hell we're gonna have time to go back to the book store just some professor couldn't tell the stores what text to have ready.

That's more likely an issue with the bookstore not getting the order or the publisher not shipping it. If the professor didn't get it in, then I'd guess that's not a very organized department.

But I don't have to deal with that stuff. Adjuncts teach whatever text they tell us to.

I would also, however, probably faint if my students actually showed up with their books for the first class.

I've ran into the situation the before where the books weren't in from the publisher yet...and the bookstore had that information. The prof had placed the order, they knew what book I needed, it just wasn't there. I understood--wasn't the prof's fault or the store's.

This, today, was nada. zip. zilch. No information at all on what the prof wants us to use. There are other instructors teaching the same class, and *their* books were there. No information on if I was supposed to use the same thing for this other prof's class...and I wasn't about to buy something and have it be wrong.

Just, "the professor hasn't placed an order."

Well... some professors just don't require a text. They photocopy stuff, or they'll give you links and downloads on the Internet. I know one of my (full-time) colleagues does that because she doesn't want the students to have to spend a lot of money. What class is it?

Of course, if you see signs of enormous disorganization in the first class, you might want to run for the hills before it's too late. (Or quietly ask another prof you trust in that dept. if you should be concerned.)

It's Native American Literature. A couple of the bookstore employees had him for this class before, said he was amazing. Also didn't mention that I may be looking for books that don't exist...if he was a handout-y prof, I'd think they'd say something?
