Heh. That is funny. I think my buddy reacted with a "Huh. I'm being sued. By Ultimate Electronics." To which I replied, "Really?" And he said, "Yup. So, can you help me move my stuff into storage today?" End of discussion.

I thought there was a pervasive attitude in the Trek community that the military was good. Based on the "service" ideal--or "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one."

Also, I thought you military people (Rigil, T'Sara, et al.) would be glad to know that at the Cherry Hill Star Trek convention on Sunday there was a "Propose a Plot for the Next Star Trek Movie" contest. Well there were like ten contestents, including one of my astronomy club friends, but that's another story.

Anyway,

One guy telling a story was in the military and had a real military bearing. He got wild applause just when he gave his name and rank. Then he proposed a Star Trek story was about the "grunt troops" fighting down on the planets, with the ships just providing direction and supplies from above. Another round of solid applause for that story, and the presenter and conference organizer interjected that he agreed that we need a such a story in Star Trek, something like "Starship Troopers."

So I disagree that the fans are antimilitary and wonder if it isn't the opposite.

JadziaKathyrn, that IS funny. I didn't think of that.

I don't think ST fans are anti-military either. But I think a lot of ST fans are compasionate and don't like to see violence for violence sake alone. Personally, I hate to see people dying when I believe the reason for fighting is wrong. But I am behind the guys in the field that have to go and do their duty no matter the reason they were sent there. Star Trek does concentrate on the officers and really could use more focus on the enlisted people, the grunts that have to do the difficult hand-to-hand stuff. The guys in the trenches, the guys manning the guns on the ships, the guys jumping out of the boats and running up the beaches while trying to keep their weapons dry and not fall over the bodies of their friends dying around them. Yeah, I'd like to see more about these guys, who are the real heroes...whether they chose their fate or not. Sigh, but it might be hard to keep the optimism of Star Trek in focus when you are writing stories about these people. Still, I'd like to see more about the enlisted people.

Explain that to some of these people on these Trek boards.

Uh, sounds like you already have tried, CX. Well, this is the only board I visit because I just don't have the time due to RL demands.

Rigil,

Tell your roomie to go see his legal officer. IIRC the suit can be postponed while he is deployed under the Soldiers and Sailors Civil Relief Act. I believe all that is required is a letter from legal.

A whine: I haven't been able to go to Sauna for many weeks this summer. Usually I go twice a week and it's definitely not enough to only have a shower. I was really looking forward to my Sauna evening and then when I finally get to go, the Sauna has broken down. :explode: It was barely warm only 60C (good temperature is about 90C) and throwing water into the sauna stove didn't have any effect. :bitch:

Ah, Bookworm, it is the simply pleasures in life that make it happy or sad, right? If that one little thing you have been looking forward to does not work out for you, the whole day can be ruined no matter how well the rest of the day went.

Yup. He asked me to make sure to get the name, number, time of call, etc. from anyone who calls or shows up while he's deployed about this since he invoked that Act.

As to the Trek fans & the military, it's especially pronounced on some of the larger boards (i.e. TrekBBS, etc.)

Yeah Jag should be able to help somehow.

I really haven't noticed an anti military attitude in trek, maybe anti war...but not "I hate the service member, they need to die!" etc.

*shrug*

Anyways....I'm knitting this baby blanket for a friend and I'm trying to figure out how I am going to put backing on it before I head down to Charleston,SC next month.

I totally agree with you, T'Sara, and JustTripn. Because I'm pro-military, I'm anti-unnecessary war (and I'm not going into whether I think any of the wars in the past 50 years were necessary or not. Some were, some not.) It kills me every time I hear about someone, usually right at the beginning of their life, dying.

For the blanket, I'll check my kajillion knitting and crochet books, since I usually don't line my afghans. When I've made quilts/blankets in the past, I found that quilt binding (found at any fabric store in the trim area) is really helpful, and baby blanket binding is nice and satiny and soft. You just pin the backing to the blanket, surround it all by the binding, and sew it down (and I would suggest tacking the blanket down at other points near the center and edges.

Of course, if you're pressed for time, you can see if your local dry cleaner/tailor can do it for you. One girl that I work with just finished knitting a jacket, but since she can't sew, took it to the dry cleaner to get it lined. for $15, she had a perfectly lined jacket in a very short period of time.

we need a such a story in Star Trek, something like "Starship Troopers."

No, please. Just make another Strship Troopers movie. I can't imagine anything more antithetical to Trek than Starship Troopers.
