Linda wrote:Coffee, let us know how you like those early Carey books! I really got into Piper and Sarda. Wanted to see more of them and I think she was going to write more about them but the publisher didn't want to continue with the way she was writing those books. Piper's first command given her by Kirk - that space tug, she sure did well with that. (Sorry, but that is not too much of a spoiler, I hope.) I won't say anymore, but just let you read the books.
Oh, I think it was Carey who wrote "The Great Starship Race" which I also liked.
I loved them the first time I read them so you can say all you want. You can't spoil them if I've already read them before

Carey is my absolute favorite Trek novelist. Her and Peter David.

Cool. I'd like to see more on those characters but have no time to ever think about writing about them myself. It would be great to see where you take them.

Re: What are you...
^I'm just curious, when you read them, did you see any hints at romance between Piper & Sarda or do you think it's all just friendship?

Re: What are you...
Uh, LOL, Coffeecat! Yes I saw potential for romance. I did not want to mention it to you in case you did not have that intent and had a different direction for them. I don't know where Diane Carey would have taken it, but I suspect that might have been one direction she could have.
Then I thought it would be interesting to see more of how Sarda struggled with his Vulcanness, or lack there of. Was it implied that his family was very strict and he did not measure up in some way? And then Piper made some cultural faux-pas in trying to help Sarda, which harmed instead of helped and made him want to avoid her. That was in the first of the two novels? In a way, it is like Trip and T'Pol trying to work out the cultural differences. And I think that I am trying to do something similar with my Samik character in the Raptor story - a guy who has partially lost touch with his native culture. Sigh, I'm not succeeding too well with that, I think, because I have had comments that Samik is not behaving like a Vulcan. Well, duh! That is his main problem.
And I loved the way Piper used that tug to stop the bad guys from escaping with Enterprise. She seems to be the more dominant personality of the pair. Sarda seems more of a quiet loner type who once he found a mate would be deeply committed. They probably would always have issues and have to work at their relationship. The cultural and personality differences could be great for developing dialog and drama. But I did think there was something underneath that was always strongly pulling them toward a romantic relationship and neither was admitting to it yet - that Carey wrote into her characters.
I read these books quite recently - a few months ago. I am trying to find all the novels that have major Vulcan characters.

Re: What are you...
Thanks for your take on it. I just wanted to make sure I was being unbiased because I sometimes tend to want to turn everything into something romantic.
I always felt that Piper, while she is really sorry about screwing up her friendship with him, was so strong and dominant that she'd be the one always resisting any kind of romantic involvement. And Sarda (I just read about 3-5 chapters of the first one) so far seems like he is alone, yet he doesn't want to be. Piper doesn't understand him and neither does his own kind which makes for some interesting character friction.

Re: What are you...
Let us know where you are posting any Piper/Sarda stories! I don't think they would fit in this site, darn. Maybe you could contact Diane Carey if she has a web site, or through her publisher. She might be willing to share her thoughts on these characters.

oh man, you're not kidding. That was awesome.... btw, did you ever notice there's a guy in the credits as "Shenkar".... and they never actually had a Shenkar? I think that's the deep voice that Sylar used when he was being evil, and the "person" the little girl Molly was referring to when she said "he can see me when I think of him..." ... and maybe will be central part of S2.
