I wasn't sure where to put this report. I was very tempted to put it in the Convention Thread. Becasuse I'm at a convention!!!! The Texas Star Party. I'm having a blast. I arrived Monday night and had to parK the car outside the ranch and walk in There are 500 people here! They were all set up on the observing field and I went wandering in the dark looking for my group of 7 other Pittsburghers! and after an hour I FOUND THEM. The skies are increadible! It looks like a huge edge-on galaxy streches overhead from horizon to horizon. And it's OUR GALAXY. There is a picture of it I will post when I get back. There is no way to describe it. I saw Omega Centari, which I was all hyped up about, but also Centarus A galaxy which looks like two galaxies that ran into each other. This is even better. There is a huge glowing blob of stars with a think stripe through the center.

I just got back from a lecture about the science being done at Mt. Wilson Observatory. OH I TOOK A TOUR of MCDONALD OBSERVATORY, which is just up the road. I am in heaven!

We stay up all night and sleep in till 11:00. Sound like a con?

Enjoying my new black fake leather office chair that I just finished assembling. Oh the bliss . For little over 190$ it's quite a decent chair and to consider that before I used some ordinary dining room chair it doesn't even compare. Now back to lounging

The best thing about the chair is that it supports the back and neck and the lower end of the head the right way.

I envy you - this thing I'm sitting on it hard as a rock. I wish I could have one like the one I have at work (Geeze - I miss work - how lame is that?) but they cost hundreds and hundreds. They're made of some kind of mesh that just cuddles you.

You see, this is one of my theories regarding work. In my kinda job, sitting's very important. And we do a hell of alot of it. Such as working at Sound/Lighting/Effects/Video Desks, or being whats called a "Rig Monkey" which basically means strapping yourself into a (very comfortable, actually) harness and winching yourself 30-40ft up into the air to work on lighting rigs. Not as scary as it sounds, believe me. Of course there is the other extreme of not being able to sit at all such as backstage work or manual labour.

Now we find that we work a lot better when we have summat comfortable to sit in while working. Sitting on hard chairs/Flight Cases is uncomfortable, and distracts us from what we're doing, which is not a good thing and in rare instances has the potential for danger/damage to equipment or to people. Not acceptable. Which is why we take good chairs with us wherever we go. They're also good for sleeping in prior to a gig or while waiting for some bunch of musicians to turn up for a soundcheck.

So in short, when employers give employees good chairs, they're either going to work well, or go to sleep.

Well, I wouldn't expect anyone else to know why it's happy news, but I just made 20 pairs of earrings, which makes me feel a little more like myself.

I just spent 2 weeks trying to make a model of a phase rifle for the costume contest. It's rather lumpy and looks like it's made of Playdoh, but it's DONE!



I asked Elessar's opinion and he said:

from the distance everyone is watching from, it will probably look fine.

Diplomatic, isn't he?

Maybe it WILL look better from a distance. At least, I hope so.
