Veering into the OT world, but I was just saying to someone that Jeff Bridges is good in Crazy Heart but he gave the performance of a lifetime in "The Big Lebowski" as The Dude. But that film, which in the last ten years has become as much of a classic as any film can be, was totally ignored by the academy and other awards groups. The Dude is probably one of the ten most memorable characters in film history. But The Big Lebowski either turned film conventions on their heads or ignored them completely - people didn't know what to make of that film when it came out because none of the tropes parodied in that Cracked "trailer" exist in the film.
So, what film wins and award versus what is good or becomes a classic is totally different.
