Somehow, that doesn't surprise me. I really can't picture you writing poetry much - voluntarily anyway. Poetry was a separate class, so I never had to do any. Not that I mind poetry per se, but I prefer prose.

But - you people can take these classes even if it's not in your major? At my school we had to get permission from the instructor and they were small classes so you couldn't be sure. Fortunately, my roommate was a creative writing major and she let me drop her name because she knew that I actually could write (fiction) my way out of a paper bag, unlike a lot of historians.

Ours is the other way around.

There is a separate poetry class, although I dunno if it's just a literary critique course or an actual write poetry class. As to me, I'm fine with reading poetry (providing it meets certain criteria), but I just don't like writing it. Doing so doesn't interest me, so I'm sure that any such poetry works will reflect this.

It's an elective, and I'm at a community college. Plus, I don't even have my damned associates yet. Circumstances are probably different once I get my bachelor's.

I can take whatever classes I want here, so long as I can pay. The catch is that financial aid goes bye-bye when I hit a certain number of credits.

Well, if you guys write any Trek poetry, I for one want to read it!

I only got loans this year for financial aid, which was my own stupid fault because I mixed up the deadline and the priority deadline. If you're after the priority deadline (even only a week or so, like I was) you apparently only get loans. I'm still beating myself up over that because I had to take out over $11,000 this year.

On the plus side, though, I had my first class today. History 647: Seminar in Methodology and Historiography. I think it should be a good course. The only downside is that we have to watch Saving Private Ryan for the History Outside the Academy unit, and I need to find some sort of cut version. I'm pretty sensitive and I've heard that's a graphic film. I don't want to lose sleep for a week over it.

So, any other suggestions on which story to write?

How much does a year in a university cost in the US?

At the state university (as opposed to private universities which would cost a lot more) where I work it costs $487 per undergraduate credit. The usual course is 3 credits and a full load would be 12 - 18 credits a semester. For out-of-state (of Wisconsin) residents, it is a couple hundred more per credit. Then, you add housing and meals to that, which would be roughly $500 to $1000 a month. So roughly $9500 a semester which is four months long. Oh, and text books can run you several hundred dollars, so that puts you over $10,000 a semester. A lot of students here still live at home with their parents and also have parttime jobs. Many students take less than a full semester load - 3 to 9 credits, for some semesters. And sometimes they drop out for a semester or a year to work fulltime and save up to go back to college. That is dangerous, because sometimes they don't come back, but just continue to work and get on the job training. This is in the Milwaukee area. I don't know how it is in other parts of the country. I hope this helps.
Working on a major fan fic project. Two-thirds done. Hope to put it up in the not TOO distant future.

In my country it varies from around 1800 to 7000 dollars a year.State owned universities usually between 1800 to 2300 a year. They are really milking you over there.

Yes, they're milking us like Mitchell milks his cows. Because if it's a state university the state legislature won't let them raise tuition willy-nilly. So, instead of saying, "I guess we have to listen to the elected government," some bright spark came up with fees. Should one want to park, one must pay $50. Please know this does not promise you a parking spot even remotely close to where you need to be. In fact, it doesn't promise you a parking space at all. What it does is protect you from getting a ticket when parked in university lots. Then there are other mandatory fees for "non-tuition related educational expenses," for the school newspaper, etc.

But, I've discovered that you can save a lot of money by eating only one meal a day in the cafeteria. The other two I eat in my room (cereal, soup, microwaved baked potatoes, etc) and I'm going to save a small fortune that way.

About 10 years ago, UPenn (a private university) wanted $30,000/year (not counting dorm, which was mandatory for freshmen, books, food...). I'm sure that it's considerably more now.

My parents and I were very very lucky and I instead went to a state school that had offered me a full scholarship (thanks to my being a geek in high school and staying in state-- two schools had made that offer). Not as impressive as UPenn, but I still got a very good education, smaller class size, and the same job that I had wanted at the same company that I wanted to work at from the beginning when I came out.
