It is interesting. If it is the one that sank in 1933, it may have been a rum runner bringing in booze to Mobile which was a favorite entry point. Prohibition ended in '33 so they may have been stocking up to await the change in the law, or just trying to fill a pent up demand.

There was an interesting article in the Alabama Historical Society's magazine about it a couple of years ago. Although not as big or as well-known as Chicago, smuggling and organized crime had been honed to a fine edge on the Gulf Coast.

There was a really cool picture in the article of a Customs Guard sitting on top of a truck full of confiscated liquor, guarding it with a Model 1903 Springfield army rifle.
