Ammo & Kitties

Postby Elessar » Fri Sep 26, 2008 10:23 pm

I found a good deal on some 7.62x54R Polish 1976 surplus ammunition, so I bought... a lot. :D

Right now I just have two Mosin Nagant bolt actions that fire this ammo but I'm thinking about picking up a 1980's Romanian PSL (Russian SVD copy) or a surplus 50's SVT-40, which are both semiautomatic rifles that fire this type of ammunition and have much more handleable recoil than the Mosins.

1976 is some of the newest 7.62x54R surplus still around:

Who's the kitty?

And...exactly HOW OLD is this ammo? Are you sure it won't blow up in your face if you use it for target practice?

The kitty is Jack :) He's our younger cat. He's like 3. The older one is Sonic, he's 16:

Oh, it's 1976, says right there. Nah, it's almost perfectly safe :). I have a crate of 600 rounds of Bulgarian 1950's stuff I bought several months ago that I've fired ~100 rounds out of and it's been flawless, not even a hangfire. I did some research talking to people who use this stuff before buying it. Usually, there's a general trend to go by. Like, with .303 British, people will advise STRONGLY against buying POF Pakistani/Indian stuff because it hangfires a lot. Polish 1970's came very highly recommended by folks who are obsessed with these Mosin Nagant rifles and the 7.62x54R cartridge.

BTW: Two much cooler pictures of my cats:

Well I didn't wanna LIE and say PERFECTLY safe! There is always the small chance of misfires and hangfires but the biggest rule of thumb is just not to open the chamber until it goes off. A hangfire just means you pull the trigger and there's a delay of a few milliseconds before it goes off, which can be a weird feeling. Misfires are where the round doesn't go off at all. Basically, it doesn't go off. I've never had that happen.... ok LIES, I have had that happen and I didn't think about what I was doing and I removed the round without waiting, but you're supposed to wait like 45 seconds for it to go off. The thing is on MY experience, it wasn't a dead round. This isn't exactly going to inspire confidence but I had incorrectly reassembled my bolt a few range trips ago after a complete disassembly and soak of the parts in cleaning solvent. The firing pin didn't have QUITE enough protrusion to set off the round and instead of igniting the primer in the back of the bullet, it just kinda dented it. That was a frightening sight, to pull a bullet out with a big DENT in the friggin primer. I freaked out and threw it away into the dirt. Another probably bad idea. After a second one did it, I realized the bolt was FUBAR'd and took it apart and fixed it. But that's a misfire.

Dude,

You better be working on field stripping M-16s while blindfolded and having your three best friends all yell at you simultaneously.

Your time is coming.

If well made and stored properly, ammo can last forever. I fired some WWII surplus not long ago. Just watch out for corrosive priming.
