... and I don't recall all the details. But I do remember that as a comment added to a thread someone on this board stated that they ocnsidered it unlikely in the extreme that the US government would ever become a dictatorship. That is not even remotely their exact words BTW. Merely my best memory of their gist. If anyone can recall the remark, please PM me.

Here is my rebuttal to that statement:

Md. Police Put Activists' Names On Terror Lists

The Maryland State Police classified 53 nonviolent activists as terrorists and entered their names and personal information into state and federal databases that track terrorism suspects, the state police chief acknowledged yesterday.

Police Superintendent Terrence B. Sheridan revealed at a legislative hearing that the surveillance operation, which targeted opponents of the death penalty and the Iraq war, was far more extensive than was known when its existence was disclosed in July...

BnB,

Maryland has a history of not paying a whole lot of attention to constitutional rights.
See below.

Also about 10 years ago the State Police raided the offices of the governor's opposition candidate. I don't remember the excuse, but the effect was chilling.

Isn't it amazing what, as a society, we've allowed to happen, either out of complacancy, or the warm fuzzy feeling of "national security"?

Even sadder, as long as there's still cable TV, cigarettes, and/or beer, the average person couldn't give a crap unitl it affects them directly.
