John Fealey once did a stand-up routine about the Albert Heijn (a Dutch supermarket). Since he's English, he of course spoke English, and was very enamoured with the Dutch word for 'bag'. A funny 7-min introduction to Holland:

Ha! So is he right about filling the bag, or are the Dutch people generally honest?

We fill our own bags too, in most supermarkets, but then the STORE weighs it. But we like to have the right to agonize over our individual fruit choices.

That has actually started to get introduced in supermarkets here this year, but only some of the Albert Heijn markets and the Lidl markets weigh them at the counter as far as I know.
