Meh. No biggie. It's not like I'm not completely up front about who I am and what I do. Thanks for your concern, though.

Re: Member pics
Okay, you REALLY ARE totally up front about what you do!
I'm not sure I'd want my colleagues in the English department to know I write fanfic. It might put the nail in any chance I might have (slim to begin with) for this to become a full time gig with benefits.
Though, you never know. The community college ambience is a LOT friendlier than university departments I have known. I really like this campus.

They wouldn't find her here through that link, though, would they?

Re: Member pics
I wouldn't think so. It's a link to the front page of my local newspaper, not to the specific story. It'll probably only show my picture today. Tomorrow it'll likely just be a link to tomorrow's front page, so get a gander at the freaky Trekkie doctor while you still have the chance.
Alelou, I suppose my situation's a little different than yours in that I'll never have literati judging my job skills by the way I write my Star Trek stories. My hobbies have no bearing on my job security as long as I refrain from doing anything illegal or immoral, avoid doing anything which violates medical ethics, and do nothing overtly counter to the interests of my employer. Since all of those things would be pretty darn difficult to do on a Star Trek fan site, I think I'm fairly safe.

Re: Member pics
True. And since you really DO look great in your Mirror, Mirror outfit, what do you care if it gets printed out and posted on the office bulletin board?
I don't know how snooty the literati are at a community college, but I've already overheard other adjuncts talking wistfully about how hard it is to get their novels written, so I'm going to assume that the potential to get sneered at for writing fanfic is there.
At some point when I've completely given up on tenure or ever getting published, I'll be free to confess all!
Or maybe I should try to write scifi instead of general fiction and then it could actually help me get published. Unfortunately I haven't read general science fiction for 20 years so I'm completely out of the loop.

Re: Member pics
It would sure be fun getting back in the loop, though. And I sometimes feel the same way even though SF is all I read except for medical journals. There's a lot of stuff out there. Most of it's derivative, though. What I try to do is mostly read books written in a style that's similar to what I'm trying to write. That way I'm aware of the tropes and I know what to avoid to avoid plagiarism. The only problem with that plan is inadvertant plagiarism when I assume that something is widely known and it turns out to be an invention of the author I'm reading. I try to do my homework to avoid that, and test readers help. When someone says, "Wow, that scene reads like X's book 'Whachamacallit!'" then that's a BAD thing.

Re: Member pics
Oh man. It's been so long for me I wouldn't even know where to begin. Maybe I should start a thread for "catching someone up on the highlights of the last 20 years of science fiction writing." Not that I have time for that right now, either...

I'd go with Julie Czerneda and S.M. Stirling for starters. Maybe add the latest from old timers like C.J. Cherryh and Lois McMaster Bujold. Great stuff.

Great photo!
Um, don't take this the wrong way

but

since I've only seen you in the flesh (lots of flesh actually!

dressed as MU T'Pol
with a whole, y'know,
"drag-Johnny-Slave-down-the-aisle" thing planned,
well...in this picture,
to me....

...you kind of look like a crazy star trek fan, playing doctor.

(This is just what popped into my head after I thought, "Oh what a nice picture" and then made it a bit bigger so I could see your face, and suddenly this thought appeared in my mind. "Dear God! What is that crazy T'Pol lady doing to that innocent student??"

Sorry
