You take Spanish moss home? Do you know how many redbugs and chiggers live in that stuff??? Though apparently they did used to stuff mattresses with it and that was pretty big business around Homassassa.

Yes, it was a nice trip. I don't have high expectations -- I just go to see my parents, my grandma Thelma (who just turned 90 this year -- I took a video of her telling a ghost story from her childhood), and my goddaughter and her parents. I usually do one amusement park day in Orlando so my son isn't totally bored, and it was Epcot this year. That was pleasant, partly because when I registered for the volunteer for a day thing they got my birthday and so they gave me a button that got us a free dessert at lunch in the Japanese restaurant as well as lots of birthday greetings. It took me awhile to figure out what the heck was going on with that since the woman at the ticket booth had a thick Indian accent and my birthday was still over a week away, and it was also a little unnerving getting all those birthday greetings from total strangers, but the Indian lady had definitely hinted it was good for something to wear that button, and come lunchtime it was. :)

Epcot is showing its age, or at least hasn't changed much since the last time I was there twenty years ago, but this time we went on two rides we hadn't in the past because of long lines -- the mission to space and the test track, and those were both fun. And Canada and China had updated their movies, at least. Also, lunch was good, and my son didn't complain too much except about the old 1986 3D Captain Eo (Michael Jackson), which my mother for some reason was very intent on seeing. I was also stunned when he asked weren't we going to Homassassa Springs State Park again this visit, so I was happy to stop there on the way down to my goddaughter's house. Probably the nicest thing about the trip was noticing that my kid was growing up and becoming more fun to travel with. (Last year he'd whined most of the way through Homassassa.)

I also have to say the hotel was great in Orlando -- we stayed at Lake Buena Vista Village Resort and Spa (I think that's it), obtained cheaply via Expedia, which meant we had two bedrooms, a kitchen and a living room/dining room, for little more than I'd normally pay for a dinky hotel room up here. It was also a really short drive to Epcot. So that was a nice comfortable way to be there with my folks and made me feel a little better about them traipsing around in the high 90's heat with us. I suspect it's such a great deal because this is actually a failed condo complex, but whatever -- it made for a nice stay and also an easy drop-off at the airport Tuesday morning.

You have in use that avatar again. It reminds me that Depths' finale is in home straight. :D
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

I can't help myself. I react to the smell of it the way some do with freshly cut grass. Although it seems the AC in the car, always set to Arctic cold in Savannah, kills everything including the spanish moss.

Interesting way to make use of those empty condos. Don't you just love it when you find a good hotel room where it's one thing you don't have to worry about during a trip? Although I'm a little annoyed with hotels now. Most have adopted the safety feature of bolted shut windows or locks that will only allow 2 inches of fresh air. My last vacation souvenir was a horrible sinus infection leaving me sick for the rest of the week. Oh how they saved me from the evil sun, sand and waves... my heroes

Wow! I haven't been to Florida since I was like 5, so I haven't seen any of that stuff. It looks great. I'm glad you got a great deal on the hotel accomodations. I like to live in luxury for for the few days I'm on vacation.

Somehow, but I think you will find a slightly surprising the finale, and, if I learned to know you a little, probably you will enjoy it. ;-)

Hope you have a great time. At least that tropical depression seems to be heading away from Orlando (but straight for Louisiana, groan).

Nope. It's not allowed. I refuse to rebuild our house on Lake Calcasieu a third time. So, as my seriously fundamentalist mother-in-law is fond of saying, "I rebuke that storm in the name of Jesus." You guys are free to chime in with whatever else you think might help... crossing fingers, rosaries, pleas to Gaia... whatever. 8)

We could just hope it's a piddly little tropical storm that doesn't develop into hurricane strength ... and heads for Mexico at the last minute, but doesn't do any damage there either. Will that do?

Fantastic pics, especially of the Spanish moss. (Of which anyone is welcome to grab off of the trees in my backyard since the stuff can suffocate them.) This has got me all excited about my own trip to Florida, either this November or next February.

The last time I went to Florida I was 12 and that was just to Pensacola and Orlando. This time I'm going with the intent of seeing at least ONE of the last of the Shuttle program's launches in person from the causeway bridge near KSC, though I'll also spend a lot of time there to just enjoy the sights. I've been to JSC a gazillion times (grew up near there), have seen the Shuttle close up and piggy-backed on the back of the 747 at Ellington field (was a chapter board member of a local branch of the National Space Society, so we got a closeup) and I've even been inside the Apollo 11 Mission Control center, but I've never seen a launch in person. Gotta change that while I still can.

Just thought I'd post the most recent favorite of my grand child photos. This is Bird (her real name is Shayla, but we call her Bird because she seems like a bird) with a rose bush she bought for her preschool teacher. Actually, I bought it but she picked it out "that one, Hanna". She can't say "grandma" so she calls me "Hanna".
