Ooooooooo Red Mars is just getting better and better. Very very clever. Gerontological treatment so the characters get to stay alive for longer. Crafty crafty. I'm quite enjoying it Ann!

Has anyone ever read The Ethics of Star Trek? I'm doing temp work at the local college bookstore and someone had that book. (On an unrelated note, you can tell it's a college with mostly rich kids because somebody paid $2.79 for a pack of highlighters. I paid $0.99 for the exact same package at Walmart.) Anyway, I thought that was pretty cool. Imagine getting assigned to read about Star Trek!

I'm reading Gravity by Tess Gerritsen. Published in 1999. Its one of the books in the boxes from my mom's estate that I am still going through from two years ago. Its about an outbreak from a culture of single celled organisms in an experiment on the International Space Station. Just started it, and it's laying out the angsty relationships before getting into the science (or pseudo science), since I'm gulable and and easily suspend disbelief, LOL. So far, an entertaining read. Maybe I will go look up some book reviews online later.

I've jumped back into reading "The Histories", Herodotus. I'm gonna try to hit like 10 pages a night when I'm ready for bed so that I can finish it in a few weeks. A tiny bit of leisure reading is better than none.

What is Red Mars? It's the beginning of an amazing trilogy about the terraforming of Mars. Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars. I have one negative comment about this book--the story so vivid, so broad, so dynamic and complex, and the backstory so complete it will make every book you read for a while after seem lame--like for the books I read right after, I was asking myself, why didn't the author finish this? This is just a story outline.

Right now I'm reading "The Best Alternate History Stories of the Twentieth Century" and the first one I read was so timely: "Suppose they Gave a Peace," by Susan Swartz. We have a typical 70's family--conservative dad who fought in a war, pacifist/women's libber daughter going to a Quaker college, son a Marine in Vietnam, mom a Quaker--they all argue, but love each other, and they get together and watch the Nixon versus McGovern election and here's the alternative history part--McGovern wins. And then everything plays out not quite the way eveyone had hoped. Everyone grow up and changes some by the end of the story.
