Depends on the type of employment, that's not universal. I had an internship (for the State Gov't even) where I didn't get paid "overtime pay", just ordinary wages, and it was legal. I don't know exactly what that kind of employment was called... but I know that later when I was a contractor, it was the same for that case as well... but contracting is all kinds of exceptionalized.

Some companies like CACI, ATT and Harris on our contract do pay over time. Other's like Raytheon and Mine do not
