Very ouchy! Did you know that the only parts of the body that even compare to the fingertips in sensitivity are the lips and the genitals? :?
Well, I do now!

ATTENTION: UNSOLICITED MEDICAL OPINION AHEAD. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK. 8)

It's best to cover the open wound with something thick and cushy until it heals. Once the bleeding stops (it may take til the am) you could cover the fingertip with a gel type bandage like Blister Block that you leave on for 3 days and a bandaid on top of that to protect the gel. If a gel dressing isn't available, your next best option is a coating of antibiotic ointment to prevent sticking and a "fingertip bandaid" on top.
Thats pretty much what I did.

Good luck. Tip amputations hurt like hell (as you already know) and can take weeks to heal depending on how much got taken off. Does it cramp your style when typing?
Its not too bad. I use a tablet pc (stylus based, no physical keyboard... just handwriting recognition) for the most part, so my left hand gets little use.

And I havent screwed up my finger too bad, just the corner. Thank Surak for fingernails!

That's every few months you have to get a new pair. Blah!

Yup... and those new shoes that I sewed today? beautiful, fit like a glove, I releved a few times in them, boureed... and heard about three or four little cracks in the right shoe. My shank is already an L shape, and I'm guessing I have about three more classes left in them before they become barre-only shoes :( . Back to the drawing board in finding the perfect shoe that can withstand my crazy arches!

Please post those shoes!

Ok....you asked for it. :?

Keep in mind.....I haven't done pointe in a few years. So I suck.

And these pointes were a bit on the big side for me. Padding helped. :?

Also...dancing on carpet=bad....I was holding on to something for these. Promise.

Oh and turnout....yeah I know....not too great. :? I've ALWAYS had problems with it.

Good pics, T'Sara. As to turnout - I had good turnout, but nothing else which was good for dancing. Did some modern dance in college but was more into the swimming pool for fitness and recreation. A long time ago, now, ha, ha.

T'Poptarts, you are a wizard of images!

Sigh. It's not fair. Everybody has turnout. Even my HUSBAND has turnout. (He did ballet in high school back when he was less linebacker-ish. His aunt is the director of a ballet company and was desperate for male dancers. He did it because it was great exercise and he got to hang out with half-dressed girls all the time! 8) ) Me, on the other hand... well... my husband's aunt told me when I was 21 that I'd have "the perfect dancer's body" if it weren't for my lack of turnout. I've got femoral anteversion (knock knees from inward rotation of the hips). I tried ballet as a child and it was excruciatingly painful. The only way I'd get turnout past about 45 degrees is if I had my femurs broken, rotated and reset. Life isn't fair sometimes, y'know? I would have loved to be a dancer. :(

I could never do anything dance related. I have the grace of an elephant when I'm on my tiptoes. And while I'm athletic in some respects (tennis and baseball), I suck at any activity that involves my feet. Soccer was not pretty, believe me. I was always tripping on the darn ball. I even used to hear the sound of my feet stomping while I was running on the tennis courts. And all the while my coach was like an antelope out there. My style may not have been pretty, but it worked.

I'm actually impressed that you liked them.

One of these days I'll see if I can put up some Highland pictures....maybe even a youtube.

Maybe.

Ouchie! They do look baggy-- and with the tapered toe, they must be extra uncomfortable (my wide-load feet need a nice, ugly, wide platform). Okay... so let's play "How much does Ember know about pointe shoes": Are those Russian Pointes (I'm guessing because of the color and no drawstring)? They do look like beautiful shoes, though, dirt and all. (My favorite pairs were from this last ballet-- we dyed them black, so no dirt! Of course, the dye kept coming off on my feet, but not everything can be perfect)

I used to have perfect, 180 degree turnout until my achilles tendon rupture... then, somewhere between crutches and rehab, my hips decided that they didn't like ballet anymore. I'm still working on trying to stretch them back into a semblance of turnout. Fortunately, what with all of the knee injuries that have been cropped up because of forced turnout, the dance world is starting to change and schools are being adamant about working in your natural range. It's still going to take a lot of time to make change happen, but at least it's there.

I used to freak all the kids at school (well and my rhythmic gymnastics coach :?) with my *gulp* 270 degrees turnout. Like seriously isn't it like totally creepy?? :? Hardly any internal rotation though :? :? frog legs.

Distracted I had a classmate with femoral anteversion, she didn't do ballet but she danced other stuff.

Yeah they are Russian Pointes.....This pair for whatever reason never quite fit me right...although the company I got them from said they were my size. *NEVER buy pointes online ever....even if you know your size. :( *

Funny thing was the next pair I got.....that I think I gave to my sister....fit like a charm.

Weird.

I have wide feet to....but for whatever reason I liked Russian's the best.

Go figure.

I had like so much trouble finding pointes because apparently only one company manufactured my baby size. :? :? :? :?

That's actually a good thing. It's criminal when some of these ballet schools put 8 year olds in pointe class. That could ruin the child's feet for life. I'm also pleased to know that someone's worried about forced turnout. The knee injuries that can result from that aren't pretty. I think that's the main reason why I cried and begged to be out of dancing at age seven. No one told me until I tried dance again at age 21 that the kneecaps and the toes have to point in the same direction. I have always been very flexible, and as a child I would just point my feet out, rolling my ankles inward to compensate. When I got knee pain so bad I could barely walk as a result, I quit. My ballet teacher 14 years later told me my original teacher didn't know what she was doing and didn't correct the ankle rolling. If I'd stayed in ballet and worked in my natural range I might actually be able to dance today. 21 was just too late to catch up, though. :?
