Thats pretty much what I did.
ATTENTION: UNSOLICITED MEDICAL OPINION AHEAD. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.
It's best to cover the open wound with something thick and cushy until it heals. Once the bleeding stops (it may take til the am) you could cover the fingertip with a gel type bandage like Blister Block that you leave on for 3 days and a bandaid on top of that to protect the gel. If a gel dressing isn't available, your next best option is a coating of antibiotic ointment to prevent sticking and a "fingertip bandaid" on top.
Its not too bad. I use a tablet pc (stylus based, no physical keyboard... just handwriting recognition) for the most part, so my left hand gets little use.
Good luck. Tip amputations hurt like hell (as you already know) and can take weeks to heal depending on how much got taken off. Does it cramp your style when typing?
