CX, loosing a pet is loosing a family member. It has been decades since I lost my childhood pet dog and I still think about him. I saved a drawing I made of him back then. Unconditional love was what he was all about. And like that family dog in the article that Blacknblue linked for us, I am sure my dog would have attacked the lead wolf of any pack that was after our family. It seems sometimes our pets show more family loyalty then the humans in the family.

I grieve with thee.

A sweet (and true) dog story which I was trying to translate into Ojibwe for my language class but I will leave it in English here.

One day, four children were playing in their back yard when their parents were not home. Suddenly the family dog pricked up his ears and ran off into the fields behind the house. There were some hunters back there, hunting pheasant. The dog was trained by the children's father to point and retrieve pheasants, so he joined in the hunt with these strangers. He pointed and stood still. The hunters noted where he was pointing and shot a pheasant. Then the dog ran into the weeds and emerged with the pheasant in his mouth.

The children were watching the family dog hunting with these strangers and were worried. They saw the dog run back toward the strangers who had shot the bird. But the dog ran past the hunters and up to the house where the chidlren lived with their parents. The dog dropped the pheasant on the door step of the house and stood panting, smiling a good doggie smile at the children. So the children grabbed the dog and the pheasant and went into the house and locked the door until their parents returned home. The family eat well that night.

Moral of this story: Inimoosh (dog), unlike Maiingan (wolf), will hunt with any pack. But like Maiingan, Inimoosh feeds his own.

I'm so sorry, CX. :( I went through this myself with my cat 2 years ago. Your dog is at peace now at least. Take care.

The hardest part for me was picking her up and carrying her after she was dead. Then later on I felt like she was outside and I should let her in because it was getting cold out. This morning I felt like she should be at the bottom of the stairs waiting for me to let her out. It's going to take a while getting used to her being gone. At least she went easy. I think she knew her number was up when we tried to help her stand but she still couldn't. She stopped struggling and whining after that. :(

Please, stop!
I know shared sorrow can make people better. But, at your words, I don't feel me so. :(
Anyway, don't mind! I, we, are here. :)
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

I think some animals, like some people, know when it is time to let go of life, to give in to the inevitable, to stop struggling and just peacefully slip away. It is sad for those left with the daily life patterns that are still ingrained but now have to be altered. Grieving hurts. It involves knitting back up those big empty holes in the fabric of life. The healing, the mending takes time. But that is because there was so much love, and love is good.

Talk about her if it helps, CX. It was the same way with my cat. I'd brought him home from work (I worked at an animal hospital back then) as a wedding present for my husband. I ended up having to put him down right on our 16th wedding anniversary. He just laid in my arms with complete trust and let go. No fear. He was actually purring, which really broke my heart. But it was very peaceful. He'd lived a long and healthy life too. It was just time and I had to let him go.

I think what happens is we become accustomed to the routines in our lives. All of those little things really do mean a lot. More than we probably realize until they are gone. It hurts and we feel empty when anything is missing. But you did the right thing for her. Hopefully there is some comfort in that.

I hope I'm not depressing everyone and I hope you feel better soon, CX.

Sorry about your dog, CX! My condolences! :(

I got back from my parents today. Turns out we were all sick to varying degreees in succession, so there weren't a lot of celebrating and/or eating Christmas food.

Three of my friends have lost longtime feline companions this bleak midwinter. The solstice had a definite tinge of sadness. I'm glad my Frankie is still relatively young, though a trifle portly, :)
