Reading: Falls the Shadow by Sharon Kay Penman. It's a saga, almost an epic really. If you like historical fiction, I can't recommend it enough. It's one of those books where the characters (which truly did exist) seem propelled to a titanic clash as though it were fate, and everything builds up until you know that, either way, some sort of tragedy will befall. But you picture these characters, and know that some part of them truly existed... and you can't put the book down. And if you want drama - it's not just a civil war, it's wrenching apart families. Powerful reading!

I wonder why none of us hate you?
But none of us do.
Probably because we're just that much smarter than everyone else you know.

In all the schools I went to, everybody had to give everybody else a Valentine. I assume you could give bigger or better ones to those you liked best. Can't really remember. Mine tended
to get weird looks on account of being homemade.
So, one for Distracted and one for T'Poptarts. Any other takers?

(And I never used the school library
)
The librarian was my best friend. I used to miss the bus on purpose so I could stay in the library and visit. Then I had to walk home, but it was worth it.

It was a farce at my school. We had to buy in bulk, sign each of our mass produced little name tag sized cards, and walk around th eroom stuffing them into each other's sacks that were hung in rows at precisely the same point on the corner of each desk. Like the little assembly line that it was. Boys gave other boys the same identical cards that we gave the girls, and vice versa. Nobody went without, and nobody got anything special. Nobody was more equal than anybody else. Yay.

Then recess came again, an it was back to being chassed non stop around the playground, or not allowed to join in any games. While yer runnin from yer classmates, or tryin like hell to avoid gettin hit with a basketball, While the same teachers who enforced that stubid Valintine card givin thing, Dont eve give a Rats ass whats happening to you. God I hate this holliday.

Think Im gona stay away from public places till after it passes.

Re: What are you...
I'm not sure if we *had* to give everyone a valentine or not. But they didn't all have to be the same size. Either way, my mother made me give one to everyone.
Instead of reading/watching/listening to, I've got a new one: Laughing about. This thread got me thinking of a funny Valentine's Day story. In fifth grade I was "going out" with this guy named Zac. Which means next to nothing when you're ten, but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, his best friend Paul was the one who asked if I would go out with Zac a couple of months before. So when Valentine's Day came Paul brought in a little box of chocolates for Zac to give to me. (Don't ask me why.) But - and this is the good part - Zac ate them!!!
Frankly, I get much more enjoyment out of thinking of this now and again than I would've out of chocolates, which would've been long forgotten.

Re: What are you...
Yep. Sounds to me like Paul was the one with his act together. Matchmaking at that age! I mean, really!
Sigh. He was probably gay.
