Apparantly, if you're in the middle of it, it is garbage to the horizon all around. It's kind of "uncleanable".
Added to which, it's over 50 years old, it is 30m deep as well as being the size of 2xTexas, and so it is actually HOME to millions of tiny and not-so-tiny sealife. If you got rid of it, you'd literally kill millions of creatures.
Of course, the creatures who feed around it (including tiny krill and phytoplankton and stuff who eat this plastic at the molecular level) then eat each other on up the food chain, until the 26-year-old tuna in your lunchtime sandwich is half-polystyrene and other shite like that. Tuna travel something like 70000 km/year around and around the world.
What a fucking conundrum.
