When my son's girlfreind(?) called him about it. he was standing right in front of that very restaurant (Damon's) waiting for the bus. So this weekend I guess I drive him over an back to work each night. So I don't want to hear any jokes about "long live the gun show loopholes" or "your cold dead hands." That 19-year-old had a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Surely you must know that no one here would joke about something like that. It is a horrible thing for anyone to be the victim of such a crime, most especially a young person with the whole world laid out in front of them. And to have your son be standing there must have made your blood run cold. I know it would have made mine freeze. I suspect it would have made any parent react the same way. I always hated letting my kids go where crimes had occurred in our neighborhood. Sometimes you can't avoid it, there are just too many of the cursed places. But a parent can't help feeling their gut tighten up. I understand your fear, and your anger, and your frustrated pain. I know exactly how you feel. Every parent on this board knows exactly how you feel.

Someone robbed a restaurant? You mean like a Denny's like in Pulp Fiction where they rob all of the patrons? Wild. I didn't think that actually happened anymore (restaurants).

It's shitty, but in my mind just reinforces the truth of the fact that in the conceal & carry debate, there's no place that it doesn't make sense to carry. When I had this debate with my mom she would say something like "Well why would you take a gun somewhere peaceful like a restaurant? Do you expect something to happen?" Well. No. But there you go.

El, if the news story I looked up is the right one the kid got shot just after midnight when he was closing him. He and his buddy were working together when a gang banger pushed hsi way in, shot the teenager and forced the second worker to hand over the cash. Then he made a break for it. According to the stories I read, he hasn't been caught yet.

No way to know where he got the gun. Legal buy, stolen, or taken off the body of a cop. And even if the teenager had been carrying he might have been caught by surprise in a situation like that. Which is why I am always paranoid I guess.

So do I. Again, just like every other story like this, I resent it being used as an example of why guns should be taken away from the rest of us because some criminal committed a crime with one (gee, imagine that). I'm glad that your son is ok, and I'm sorry that kid lost her life, but please refrain from turning this into yet another debate about gun ownership.

Yes, let us do that please.

Speaking (very reluctantly) as a mod:

Nobody is gonna start joking about gun show loopholes or cold dead fingers here. We are not that kind of scum. We all know you are upset because it happened right across the street from where your son works, so I think we are all adult enough to let it pass this time.

On the other hand, nobody offered to say anything about it either, until you brought it up. Please don't use this to attack us. We (the gun owners on this board) are not the ones who shot that poor child. We would never do something like that.

Let's all drop this one. Please?

Yes, Black 'n blue your response was very nice and much appreciated. I don't have much to say either. The "jokes" I'm referring to are in the past. Elessar in the past made the joke about the gun show loophole and I'm obviously good friends with Elessar. All I'm saying is jokes and stupid slogans don't cut it for me in changing my mind about my predicament (and yes the NRA slogans sound stupid to me). I am obviously very frustrated to be the losing side of the national debate and all I'm saying is its not an abstract issue for me. I respect everyone's opinions here and you've actually changed my mind on certain points or opened my eyes to certain realities. Nevertheless . . . our (U.S.) rate of gun deaths is three times Canada or Great Britain, all because of our gun culture, supported by a Second Amendment that leaves us prepared to defend ourselves from government tyranny or aliens from space (I take these scenarios equally seriously). Meanwhile I'm more concerned about my son traveling all around town on the buses to his job and to his friends house. And we can't even agree on a few sensible licensing requirements.

I usually wander off someplace else for these debate, so that's my 2 cents.
I'm donating my body to science fiction.

Meanwhile, I am venturing into the wilds of darkest upstate NY tomorrow. And I won't even be taking my guns  . If I don't make it back, keep my memory green folks.

Starting a completely new subject, I just heard on the news that a 17 year old boy was shot in a gang fight three blocks from my house. One hour ago.

There was/is a church festival going on tonight. A crowd gathered, which drew a crowd of teenagers, which got rowdy. Then the fight started. The 17 yr. old boy was DOA. The cops are still there, apparently something is still going on but the reporters are not allowed to get close enough to get details yet.

Last month the SWAT team raided the house directly across the street from me (the one where my neighbor later knifed somebody).

Several houses just around the corner have been the target of drug raids in the last couple of years.

Just in case anyone might have been under the impression that I keep a loaded shotgun in my bedroom because I like to pretend that I am Davy Crockett, or that I am attempting to over-compensate for feelings of inadequate masculinity... that ain't the reason.

A few years back, a burglar was running from the police, cut through our back yard and took refuge in our storage shed. We didn't know about until the next day when we found the door open.

When my daughter was still in High School, the slaughtered body of a whore was found lying in the back lot of a flower shop that joined onto the alley of a street which my daughter walked every day on her way to and from school. But this was nothing unusual for the time. It just happened to be the closest point where a body turned up that a member of my family actually might have encountered one. Rapes and muggings are, and always have been, routine in that neighborhood after dark.

The Chief of Police announced day before yesterday that he is closing another police station, due to budget constraints.

Okay something random... so I'm downloading SGA and on the number of seeds it says 1812. And of course this is what jumps into my mind:

Funny, the first thing that jumps to my head is the War of 1812. :D

As for the other stuff, if you want to have a serious debate, head over to CIDvision, please, we have a place for it. The only thing is, I'm pretty sure feelings are going to end up being hurt.

Me too! Closely followed by the 1812 Overture, which I rather like.

Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

Yeah... *sarcastic tone*Wo-hooo, I'm so proud for living where I live. The best thing is that my town's festival begins this week, with the stands near the town hall with the cheaper drinks that everybody knows will use a part of the money to finance the organization*end of sarcastic tone*
