I actually almost had front row tickets to domestic violence this weekend (not in MY family). Terrible, terrible. I think you can joke about it, but you have to know in good faith that it's a total joke.

I think one of the greatest Humanity's things is the ability to joke about everything (And surely Trip would agree with me. ) Simply, you must be absolutely limpid: joking is joking, reality is another thing.

That's so wrong...but so funny!

Domestic violence is awful...whether the victim is a man or a woman.

That said, when presented in the right light and to the right audience, anything can be funny. Carrie Fisher said something brilliant in an interview when she was asked why she told so many stories about the awful things she's lived through (drug addiciton/bipolar disorder, husband #2 leaving her for a man, watching her parents' marriage disintegrate because of her father's affair with Elizabeth Taylor, etc.) with a humorous edge. I'm paraphrasing here, but it went something like "I have to laugh at it, because if I don't, that means my life is a tragedy and that's just not acceptable." I couldn't agree more.

Unfortunately, as I recently discovered in another discussion, humor is often mistakenly perceived as tacit approval, even though nothing could be further from the truth.
