I'd vote for a government stimulus plan that funds that goal.

Yeah, but every branch of science has their own Armageddon scenario. With astronomers, it's the asteroids, or the sun dying. With biologists, it's a supervirus/bacteria. The chemists have all kinds of nasty combinations they could fret about. Rogue nukes for the physicists, and crazy climate issues for ecologists. And each branch of science seems convinced that the world will end this way.

My astronomy professor went on and on about asteroids destroying the Earth someday. There was some doom and gloom for you.

Cosmic Hand
This story has a great picture, which really does look like a hand in space. It's pretty wild. I mean, I could read a story with a hand in space and think, "wow, there's a stretch" and look, here it is for real.

Oh man, there's a plot just waitin' for ya.

(I'm kind of relieved it doesn't look like the Madonna.)

^ I like how even the scientists can't come up with a better term than "blob."

I thought this was pretty interesting: Robotic Penguins

It's such a long time we hear of this.
I hope (No, I'm sure) sometime we will be able to see all this become true.
You know, maybe T'Pol is waiting somewhere.
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

I guess I never thought it was the purpose or duty of science fiction to predict future technology. I thought its purpose was first to entertain, like any fiction genre, and then to speculate (not predict) on alternate futures, activating readers imaginations and maybe some of these readers would go into the sciences as a career and develop the future technology. Of course I am a hopeless romantic and optimist, so consider that in judging my opinions. L  L.

I enjoy this thread though I don't often comment on it or give links to articles. But I do print off some of the articles for my fanfiction technical resourses binder. 8)
Working on a major fan fic project. Two-thirds done. Hope to put it up in the not TOO distant future.

an appropriate ingredient, don't you think?
