So, a couple of weeks back I complained that the student in my department who has very seriously been voted most likely to go postal AND who was summarily thrown from three of his writing classes last semester was registered for my class.

I printed my roster today. He's DROPPED. Apparently, he has switched his major to business.

That, my friends, is happy news.

Let's just hope he doesn't go postal on anyone or anything thing. Because the university is certainly not taking action beyond offering an e-seminar on problem students. And in truth, some of my colleagues were outright scared of him. His advisor (not longer since he switched) is married to a policeman. She had him come to campus and stay in her office when she had to meet with him.

oh good. yikes. I finished hi-skool a couple of years prior to columbine, so I didn't have the fear I'm sure I would have now if I was in high school or anything. scary.

Oh boy, that's a relief!!!!

The weekend was just brutal getting all those syllabi in shape, but it was such a pleasure to be back in the classroom this morning. My problem child was absent, though. I'll have to give her the cell phone lecture individually. :-x I was very pleased to find my office hours coincide with my favorite fellow adjuncts' too. We don't get much done, but we have fun.

My office mate is a SW devotee and with me in the room, the conversation always turns to SciFi. Always.

That's fun. One of my office mates decided to clean out posters he wasn't using at home for our office (which has about 10 desks in it though it's seldom fully occupied). He gave me a choice of a Klingon language poster, a Yoda READ poster, and a Shakespearean puns poster. I took the Klingon and the Shakespeare to hang above my desk and told him about the youtube video of Hamlet's "To be or not to be" in Klingon. So I'm officially 'out' with those two, anyway. I'm pretty sure one of the history profs downstairs has a United Federation of Planets banner on his wall, too, and one of these days I'll be brave enough to go in and check for sure. 8)

I kind of doubt the guy who offered me the poster is really a Trekkie, though. They were just posters from his former high school classroom. He reminds me of a young Kevin Kline in a prep school movie. He even bought himself a fedora and a brush to keep the felt clean.

Yeah! Alelou is out of the closet!!!

You, guys, I didn't know whether to put this in "Happy News" or "Randomness." It should really go in "wild coincidences." Well this guy just called my work from Hawaii to recruit my boss to come teach economics to high school students for two weeks (and all expenses paid working vacation). My boss is a world famous economics teacher--does the economics on DVD lessons for "The Teaching Company." THEN, the recruiter offered the same deal to me!!! In the process of trying to impress me with how wonderful the program is, he mentioned a guy with a Pittsburgh connection who promotes astronomy around the world and will be teaching at the same time. Of course, I said, this is wild, but that is another field I know all about. Then he goes, "Oh you're going to love this. The guy's name, is Captain Archer!"

Of course I did a little scream and the guy on the other end of the phone goes, "You know who that is, of course. I don't have to tell you." (Like he could read my mind or something).

I went, "That's ANOTHER subculture I'm an expert in." He asks, "Do you speak Klingon?" I said, "No." He says, "I can speak a little Kingon."

AHHH!!!! I DID NOT MAKE THIS UP.

So, what I want to know is if you are going to Hawaii for two weeks! Are you?

I might be going to teach writing in China for five weeks next summer - but only if visa issues can be worked out.

Sounds like a great deal. I'm waiting for my follow-up email. I have a phone number. And my boss has a phone message. Otherwise I would wonder if I was dreaming. That is exactly the type of thing I would tend to dream, lol . . . Hawaii, economics, astronomy, Star Trek *shakes head. pinches self*

Congratulations, Honeybee! China! That will be so wonderful!!!

China! Well!

Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

China's not a done deal yet, but I am very hopeful. I'll have to blog from there if I get the gig.

It's way more exciting than the conference in Toledo I have to go to.
