Re: Randomness
CW, Jet lag sucks. Tell me about it. I have travelled and had to go to work soon after landing and worked long hours. Longest trip I ever was on, 21 hours. It was part of the job.
Diplomatic couriers travel thousands of miles every year and constantly have Jet lag and having to reset their intrnal clocks. they eat when they should sleep and sleep when they should eat.

Have a safe trip WG! *puts on mom cap with finger wagging* "And don't tawk to stranguhs"
SB, I know that kind of jet lag too. Great stopovers, though, and did it while I was young and energetic enough to recover quickly. Ah those were the days.
Just to add a bit of randomness... For the last few years I've been the holdout in the HDTV excitement. I felt a smug superiority that "I" didn't have any use for them and when Hubs started sniffing around to upgrade our tube to HD I would shoot him down using his weakness, practicality. "But why should we spend 'money' on something we don't need when we have a perfectly good, working TV?"
We saw displays in Frye's this weekend and the hints started up again. The displays had "Up" playing and I critiqued all of the more obvious flaws you could see in HD that you could not see on a tube TV. Today, the CostCo displays played Avatar... guess what's on the top of the major purchase list now. Darn movie.

Re: Randomness
We resisted HD for a loooong time, but it's just amazing. It's like sitting right there in the stands during a baseball game. Now I'm annoyed when I have to do without HD and the rest of digital cable upstairs.
I should finally get to see Avatar now, if my husband will finally admit he's never going to watch The Hurt Locker and send it back.

Re: Randomness
Yeah, Hubs wanted one for sports. I think he secretly wished to have one by the start of the World Cup. Yeah.. that's not going to happen.
Re: Randomness
HD has now gotten reasonably priced, and it very worth it. I have never had a TV in my bedroom, but last summer when I was recovering from surgery I bought an HD TV and it is wonderful.
Random Trip stuff: Saw Tate Modern as planned yesterday. Walked over Millennium Bridge and went into St. Paul's Cathedral. Walked down Fleet Street, which is nice because it's not very touristy. People live and work there.
Might have to play hooky from conference stuff this afternoon since my "comfortable" walking shoes are killing me. So, a trip to the West End to shop and then the British Museum might be in order.
Hope you have an absolutely wonderful time in NYC, WG.

Re: Randomness
Sounds like fun, except for the feet.
Sizes are so different over there, I used to get very frustrated trying to shop for shoes and clothing. But I was also a poor university student, so I usually just ended up at church jumble sales.
Have a chocolate-covered digestive biscuit for me.

Re: Randomness
Well I got here alive barely... My father is a maniac driver and I feared for my life. I'm not in NYC I've always found it hysterical that as soon as I say NY people automatically assume city... I'm on the east end of Long Island. 1000 feet away from the beach. Definitely not the city in any way. And as I was woken up at 6:00Am after arriving at 2:00Am I'm slightly tired. But my family is here and they are being really great about me being all broken hearted. If I'm lucky pizza will be in my immediate future...

Re: Randomness
You are so right about the sizing - it's very hard to find the right size. Thankfully, most of the London stores mark stock in both English and American sizes. But I think my feet were hurting because of my socks not the shoes yesterday - because after quite a walk to conference this morning, my feet feel fine. Dammit. Now, I can only justify buying socks.
I love the fact that Twix bars are sold as tea biscuits here. Yesterday, after the TM, I walked along Fleet Street which isn't very touristy and is where people work. No tea shops. I counted four Starbucks though. But to be fair, Starbucks has a much more extensive tea menu here than in the states.
The conference is going well, but I don't present until Saturday morning (second to last panel before closing) and I am still jet lagged. I nearly fell asleep during the Keynote lunch today - so I am back at my room. After a nap, I've decided a good walk and the British Museum will be a good jet lag cure. The stale air of the conference rooms does me no favors.
Tomorrow I will stay at the conference all day until the evening dinner, if I can.

Re: Randomness
Honeybee, pity that you cannot stay longer. The Briish museum needs longer than an afternoon. Too, I wonder if speakers corner is still at Hyde Park. If it is a wonderful treat listenig to the speakers and hecklers.
wonder what London is like now. It has been at least 20 years since I was last there.

The Britisch museum is a wonderful place to wonder around for hours. Glad to hear that you have time to see more of the city while attending the conference, Honeybee.

Re: Randomness
Thankfully, I have been to the British Museum several times, so I didn't need to spend that much time there. I did stop by and visit the Mummies - and Sutton Hoo. And the Assyrian gatekeeper guys and the Rosetta Stone. Then, I walked along the Embankment and looked at The Eye, Parliament, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. Couldn't go inside the Abbey because it was closed (but have been in before and that is one place that does not change) - but good weather in London is a blessing.
Tomorrow, I will stay all day at the Conference (boo) - but since that's why I am here I must be a good girl.
Had my first pint tonight, which was fun.
