Re: The Whine thread.
Oh dear. If hollies are the indicator, we're doomed.
Acorns would be another indicator we're doomed.
Honestly, though, I think they're just indicators of serious drought in the first half of the growing season. The plants are just putting a little more effort into reproduction in case this is it. And then, statistically after a drought we would be due for more precip the rest of the year. Except that we also got rained on like gangbusters at the end of the growing season.
So I'm not going to trust the hollies. But if I moan about record snowfalls this winter you can say you told me so.

LOL. I never gave much for all this folk-wisdom. If I get wet, when I leave the house - it's raining - and if I faceplant the pavement, there's a good chance of ice on it
I remember, how people in Omsk complained in 2005, that this wasn't a proper winter any more, because there was 'only' half a meter of snow and it was -25°C, which for siberian standards amounts to a heat wave in december. I think Shran would've liked it

Well there are certainly some wives tales out there, but most "folk wisdom" is actually stuff that is true but nobody knew why. Like red skys at night a sailor's delight, red skys in the morning sailors take warning. Now we have accurate weather science and technology to tell us why. But sailors were right for thousands of years.

Sounds like you should be writing about Andoria. I'm down here wondering whether I should wear a jacket or not to the outdoor block party we're having in our neighborhood this afternoon. It's about sixty degrees outside (farenheit). That's chilly for me in shirt sleeves. But I'm bringing hot cider and jambalaya, so I might get hot in a jacket...Kotik wrote:

I'd literally DIE! I have severe muscle spasms when exposed to cold, and cold for me is anything other than 75 f.

You probably would. We're talking about a city where about 200 people literally freeze to death each year. Compared to your plight my problems were minor though. I was just cold. Nothing a bear-fur hat (Shapka) and some fur boots (Valenky) couldn't cure.

Well I wanna see St. Petersburg in the SUMMER! So I'm thinking maybe a winter coat hat and gloves might work.

Pieter in the summer is nothing to be afraid of. It's in the western part of russia and fairly warm in the summer. It also doesn't get too cold in the winter. In contrast to the eastern part of russia (Sakha, Chukchia, Primorskiy Krai) it's positively warm

Re: The Whine thread.
I get cold in church when it's 70 f. If I ever go to Russia I'm being careful. As it is tomorrow I'm going to church tomorrow and I will freeze, spaz, and no be able to move for the rest of the day. And it's only two hours.

That's totally the problem with us. Most winters are rain rain rain, with a little bit of rain to change it up, so we don't, y'know, get bored. Most years we get 1 or 2 days where white stuff sticks to the ground like soap or heavy wet glue, and everyone drives like complete MORons and the 3 snowshovels at home depot get sold out, and all the salt. We freak RIGHT out over it for appx 1.8 days a year. Some years, there isn't any. And then once every 7 years or so, it gets really snowy. And everything just grinds to a shuddering halt. It's hilarious or horrible depending on how much of your wages it ends up costing you, and whether or not one of the aforementioned morons pushes you into a ditch with their minivan.
But as I worried above, yes it did freeze, and a bunch of big branches did come down and we were without power until about an hour ago. So no water all morning. To make coffee I heated a pot of water on top of the woodstove for about 35 minutes and then ran it through the coffee filter.
Aureilia was doing some playdough by the window so she could see, and after a while she looked up and said, “It’s like the olden days!” And I said “yep”. And then after a few more minutes she was like, “Man. The olden days was pretty boring.”

And Lee got stuck at work last night and had to sleep on his parents’ floor. We just got him back.
