Good stuff EK & JT!

Re: The Happy News thread
LOL
The stuff you get away with if you've got a reputation for being a bit whacky
We got ourselves a new manager and there's me, walking into the office this morning: "Morning to the unworthy! Worship me, you peasants!"
All people in the office folded their hands and replied in a resounding "Ommmmmmmm". We all had to try so hard not to LOL, but the new manager bloke never knew what hit him - he was completely out of whack for the rest of the day

Seriously Kotik are you going to give this young guy a stroke before he's old enough to collect retirement!

Some of these people haven't taken their medication. Let's see what happens now...

Nope, just teaching him a valuable lesson. All the rubbish he learned in university about team building exercises (or however that malarkey is spelt like) and whatnot doesn't really work in a team of friend who manage to have fun, even while doing hard work

Oh I concur. But still, it's such a short time between pranks. Maybe he'll need a break before the next one. Poor kid! He must be a little younger than me.

He's too young for everything. He's so green, he needs mowing

Okay, speaking as a person in the age group can I offer a piece of advice. It's not his fault he's young. He has his job to do, and if he's your boss, he's got to tell you what to do. Again, not his fault. It stinks, but he's probably terrified of you!

He better be, because in contrast to him, I actually know what I'm doing. How can I have any respect for people fresh out of university with a bloody magna cum laude graduation who can't malloc() if their lives depend on it? Those pansies have no idea what a bloody memory management looks like and if their sh*t.NET garbage collection fails, their applications are 3175'ing right down to hell.

Okay so here's something to bake your noodle. If you were him 15 years ago, wouldn't you be hoping for a little courtesy and respect from the people you work with. The guy did go to school, he did work hard, he was hired for his position. Don't you think your venom a tad harsh?

I WAS him 15 years ago and I started to work with other people. But I started as a programmer, not as a bloody boss. Now I'm a team leader, but I earned that by proving to be competent. I just can't accept that my superiors are selected by a piece of paper rather than ability. When god handed out competence, he was too far back in the queue to get any, I cannot accept someone as my boss, who is incompetent in the field he's working in. When it comes to the team he's supposed to lead , he can't find his arsehole from a hole in the ground. If we have to show him the way, what sort of leader is he?

Re: The Happy News thread
Oh come on you know what I meant! When you started out there were other people who thought of you as an "upstart, wet behind the ears, green kid!" People probably resented the heck out of you. In other words, you wanted support yes? A leader, Especially a young, and inexperienced leader, needs respect, and support. Otherwise how do they learn and grow?
And I thought you were an athiest?

Is he employed to deal with memory management issues and debug .NET garbage collection?

Yes. He's the "project manager". Imagine a head of car design departement, who doesn't know how an internal combustion engine works.

I bailed out today. Staring July 1st. I'll return to working for EADS (Airbus). It's the lesser of two evils, but at least people there know when the **** to shut up and let people do the job, who actually know what they're doing

Re: The Happy News thread
If your project manager is dealing with .NET garbage collection issues, you're doing it wrong!
I don't know your market. You might well be right about what sort of product it needs. But equally, he could be right. Although your users will be accountants the people choosing which software to buy may not be, and perhaps that 'bling' is what your product needs to stand out from all the other grey featureless products.
The way I look at it, if you're allowed to do a good job and like the people you're working with it doesn't makes a huge difference what the software does. I've work on a wide range of stuff from massively fancy graphical applications to stuff that sits quietly under a satellite dish and flashes an LED every now and then. Heck, you might even find some of my software on your Airbus. I enjoyed them all in different ways. If you don't get on well with your boss, think of it as a learning experience - you'll be all the better able to avoid those mistakes when you're the boss. And if he's as incompetent as you suggest, well then the people he works for will figure that out before long, and meanwhile he's making you look all the better by comparison. You never know, they could end up looking for somebody to replace him before long.
