Tonight is my last night in Afghanistan. Tomorrow I head back to Kuwait, from there back to Ft. Benning to turn in my gear, then on to Dallas (God willing and the creek don't rise).
I've been over here two-and-a-half years now (that's three (!!!) Christmases), and I'm ready (really, Really, REALLY ready) to get back home. It's been quite a ride--and not always fun--but I don't regret a minute of it. I honestly feel as if my efforts have paid off in terms of the quality of internet access available to the troops out here, and there's a lot of satisfaction to be had from that. (I've held jobs in the past where I didn't feel like I was making a difference, one way or the other.)
On my return to Dallas I'll be doing the same job, just from a more civilized location, and relying heavily on the two network engineers still out here to be my eyes and ears. I should be arriving at Dallas sometime this coming Monday (it's Wednesday night as I write this), and I will be out of email and internet range while I travel. I also anticipate that going forward the pace of my writing might slow a little (is that even possible?) in the face of all the distractions from life in the real world. But fear not! I shall persevere until the Romulans are defeated and Trip and T'Pol are in their own safe and happy corner of the universe.
I figure I am currently about halfway through chapter 8 of 'Convicted', but that's halfway in word count, not writing time. Sorry.
I'll check back into the net once I'm home.

Very funny, Scotty. Now beam down my clothes.
