Now you're just showing off! :-p I have a question for people who know about flowers, I've been trying to google the answer for an hour... What's the right size vase for holding two-dozen roses?

What, there's a "right size" for these things? I thought as long as the stems could be physically jammed in to the neck of the thing and it didn't topple over, that counted as the right size.

Well, sometimes it matters if the flowers are for something monumentally important. You don't want it ruined by a crappy vase. BTW I got my answer, so carry on with more randomness... I got my first French lesson in a review today! :happyjump:

There's more than one size of vase? Next your gonna tell me that styrofoamey green brick thing in there comes in multiple sizes. I figure the right size vase is the one the flower shop ships them in
RIP Tom, I will miss you, as will many others

I've heard cleverer and better in high school  Kotik. But if you're truly interested, I'm sorry to disappoint you, it was indeed a language lesson.

Weeble yes the green foam comes in different size blocks that you can cut and alter into whatever you need. I know, it's a miracle! ;-)

If you need translation services let me know. I've gotta use that BA in French occasionally, you know, or pretty soon I won't even be able to order dinner at a French restaurant.

If it is any consolation, I wouldn't worry about that. For some reason or other the same thing happened to me  I speak Russian fairly fluently. We had this little game we played in Russia. Whenever I met someone, who didn't know me, the missus didn't tell them, where I'm from. She rather let them guess after about two hours and not one of them got it right. They all thought I'm from one of the former baltic soviet republics :nerd:
In a Russian restaurant I would starve to death though. I couldn't order something if my life depended on it. For some reason food names where the first thing I forgot since I stopped speaking Russian everyday.

WG, if you're serious about learning French and especially if you think about putting it to use in France or Quebec, I strongly suggest you use the help of a native speaker. Nothings get's you on a french person's sh*t list quicker than getting the pronounciation wrong. They are pretty anal about their language. I think the Quebecois are not as bad as the French, but they too are not very happy about hearing their language with a heavy accent.

At least in my experience, they are even less happy about hearing you speak English.

Many of the French will not answer, if you speak English. They pretend not to understand. Thankfully not all, but quite a few French people are difficult to deal with. They refuse to answer in English or German (despite the majority speaking at least one of these languages), but they get angry if you try to speak french and don't do it right.

But that generation is dying out. I've had a lot of dealings with younger French people and they easily talk to you in English.

Well I have also been to Quebec and I love it there! I know a few phrases, and I'd greet a person in French, and then politely say that I need to use English, and every person I met was as kind and gracious as could be! They even thanked me for making an effort. I always feel so bad when I hear people having bad experiences with that.

I'd love to learn many languages, unfortunately, I have neither the money nor the health to take classes. I'm hoping to save up enough to get Rosetta Stone, but then I have to choose which language...

Well, I was in Montreal at the height of the separatist movement, and the hostility was palpable. It can't possibly be that bad anymore. I've had much more pleasant experiences in Quebec since then.

However, in Paris even back 25 years ago, I generally encountered more patience if I struggled with my crappy French than if I didn't. Then again, back in those days I was a young woman. Today they might find the exact same behavior from me quite horrifying.
