I think Trip's comment was something like "Yeah, great parties at the Vulcan embassy". It definitely sounded sarcastic to me.

LOL, a Pon Farr party. BYO lirpa?

My favorite Pon Farr joke was an advertisement created by Blacknblue:

Lirpa for sale.
Used once.
Cleaned.

Excuse me, as a person with 33 years in the Diplomatic service I know a bit about Diplomatic parties and receptions. Many Embassy Officers will go to three parties in a night. they will hold a drink in thier hands but not consume it.

Many recptions are held for visiting dignitaries, etc.

In the late 50's and early 60's the Arab (muslim) embassies were reputed to have the best parties.

Embassy personell are invited as "Offical Family" to mix, make sure no one is standing alone and to wheel drunks out of the back door.

Recptions and Parties are used to make contacts by the Embassy Officers such as Business people, military, Police (if any are invited) News media. all good sources of information. Also Spooks are on the lookout for someone with a fondness for booze or female happy. He will be invited to homes for dinner and parties until the weakness can be exploited. Other are looked over for any future usefullness.

Officers from all of the various Embassies watch how much they drink because a loose mouth can spill a bit of information. At times a party is used to convey information. I once had the third Secretary of the Burmese Embassy sidle up to me and tell me that all Western Embassy personell would be restricted to a 25 mile radious of Rangoon. I slowly made my way around the room and an hour later tried to pass the information on to the Deputy Chief Of Mission for our Embasy only to be told that "It couldn't happen. that willl never happen" guess what. Two weeks later it happened. I am not sure who in burma wanted that information to get out. Fortunatey, the Spook Station Chief believed me and I think the Spooks were able to move thier operations outside the 25 mile radius. but that is what hapens at embassy Parties and Recptions. Many people from various nations have been turned to someones use because of an Embassy Party.

I imagine the Vulcans may have picked up on this and put it to use. Certainly Andorians, Tellerites, cordians.

Silverbullet, you just gave me an idea for a story! I think Trip was being sarcastic about Vulcan parties, but what if he really had attended one? Maybe Archer was supposed to go, but somehow he roped Trip into taking his place. It could be pretty funny...Especially if he caught his first glimpse of T'Pol there...hmm...

A good Vulcan party....

I'm sorry. I'm just not seeing it. More props to you brandyjane if you can make it work... though maybe if they make the "mistake" of hiring human event planners... hmmmm.... And now I'm in need of a pensive smiley...

Brandyjane. Especially if she was still with Vulcan Intelligence. she might try to pump him for some information. perhaps invite him to the next Embassy Party so she could intorduce him to a more experienced female agent who would try to groom Trip to see if he might work for the Vulcans. Trip would not want to meet anyone else.

A while back I had an idea for a story sort of like that, Silverbullet. I haven't written a bit of yet, though. It would certainly put his "introduction" in "Broken Bow" in a new light, wouldn't it?

Brandyjane. Perhaps not. If T'Pol just wore Robes, perhaps had a different hair style when Trip first met her and it was not a long meeting, several years had passed he might wonder but not be sure. Interesting thought. why not do it?

Yes. I can see the Vulcans trying their hand at this, too:

Tuvar: I am Tu... I am Sorik. I am a legitimate businessman. Do you have a fondness for strong beverages?
Person of Interest to Vulcan Intel: Excuse me?
Tuvar: Alcoholic beverages. Do you enjoy drinking them to the point your judgment is impaired?
P.I.V.I.: Uh, No... No, I don't...
Tuvar: Perhaps you have a fondness for attractive females of your species?
P.I.V.I.: Goodness, look at the time. I'm late for my dental appointment!

Tuvar: I am Sorik. I am a legitimate businessman. Do you have a fondness for strong beverages?
P.I.V.I. #2: Uh...
Very funny, Scotty. Now beam down my clothes.

Transwarp, that was amusing. However:

That is part of the Spooks job, recruiting by any means they can. Person has Gambling debts or money problems could be open to Bribary until he can be blackmailed for taking bribes. A female happy guy or a woman who dents a few sheets. Perhaps a Wife.

One political Officer at the American Embassh Warsaw was spotted and he was compromised, shown Photo's, heard recordings.etc. He folded and started to take files out for the Soviets. He was stupid and it was spotted right away. I knew the Security Officer who escorted him back to the U.S. for trial. Said all the guy could do was to comment on females they saw. The woman who compromised him? So homely you wanted to pick up rock and throw it as her. Her photo was published in a Warsaw Newspaper saying how she had comomised an American Officer.

One of the most successful rings the U.s. ran in the Soviet Union were people who had been spotted and recurited through Bribary or other means. It was blown by A Man who turned for money and his Bona Fides to his Soviet Handler was the file on the operation.

Not many James Bonds around. Spooks are controlers working out of Embassies with Diplomatic Cover. Nothing amusing about it at all. Many countries do it. Intelligence departments in many countries sole role is to recruit by any and all means

Security tries to weed out weakness but quite a number of people slip through which is why there are defections or people caught working for the other side.

Okay, Silverbullet, I think you should write a story about embassy parties in the Star Trek universe. Maybe even have some embassy stories in your Spy Story as it continues to unfold.

Ditto. I think it'd make a great story line. :-)

SB, my dad used to work for the American Embassy in London in the 70's. He met my mom there when she going to nursing school and that's where I was born. He never really talked about what he was doing there, even now. I know that he was the steward for an Navy admiral there, but that's it.

I'm going to have T'Pol work and live at the Vulcan Compound in the "Shadows" sequel, so she can be close to her son and Trip while he's working on the Warp 7 stuff. I was curious to know what you guys thought about the compound, since I don't have any experience living in one. Thanks!
