Re: Randomness
“How long, Catiline, will you abuse our patience?” One of Cicero's many, many Catiline Orations....
but I think you and I might be the only students of latin on the site, so I'll pick a completly random (english) quote from a book and see if anyone can find it. So here it is.
"...no man is worthier than another unless he does more than another. All these squall which greet us are signs that the weather will soon clear and things go hell with us; for neither good nor evil can last for ever; and so it follows that as evil has lasted a long time, good must now be close at hand.”

Well, I expect several from European countries to have had examinations in Latin for their "maturity" examinations (end of secondary school). Asso, e.g..

Re: Randomness
Latin? Can it not be in Spanish ?
(p. 163, ch. XVIII, Edicion IV centenario, RAE
Apart from Italy, several years working with Colombian partners.

Re: Randomness
nah. I love latin and all, enough to get really peeved when someone does it so obviously wrong, but the most thought I've honestly given it since my last class in college has been for the titles of the chapters for the Slopes of Andoira. I only recongized the first one Yashida posted because, like I said, I think I translated that so many times over the years I could do it in my sleep, that first paragraph, and the second one because of the telltale Cataline...
Now I've got to find something to do with my day...

Re: Randomness
Hihi, I do love Latin and all but ever since highschool it has just been an occasional hobby thing and something of an ongoing randomness to add an obscure Latin phrase to an e-mail to an old class-mate, just to see who would be the first to confess to having forgotten enough not to be able to translate it any longer... something of an inside joke.
As for my posting it here, I was just fishing for something completely random and out of the blue to post in keeping with it being the 'randomness tread'.
Oh, and as for those 'maturity' exams to end secondary school or highschool, sorry I wouldn't know. All the surrounding countries, France, Germany, England and even The Netherlands I think have them. We Belgians do not
We just have normal end-of-the-year exams every year, including the last.

Re: Randomness
I plan on learning Latin in the near future. The school where I teach requires students to take Latin from third to eighth grades, and they have the option to continue Latin studies in high school. I feel like if I tell my students it's important to know Latin, I should learn it, too. I've picked up a lot of vocabulary roots throughout the years, but know very little about conjugating verbs or declining nouns, other than that you have to do it.

Re: Randomness
Asso is the one that would know, but he's on a TS-break, so we'll have to shelf that question. Know what you mean about the latin. I do the same (my email sig is usually in latin). My high school made 2yrs of latin a requirement, but we were an odd sort. Had to memorize the prologue to the Canterbury Tales - in their original form - Junior year, so, whenever you get a bunch of us together and convo turns in that direction, you invariably get a rousing chorus of "When dat April with the shures soughta....", also, invariably, in a crowded public setting...
Latin is important though. I like it, and it's fairly easy to learn (until you get to the subjuntive, and then everything goes out the window). In HS, it was one of my fav parts of the day. Then again, my schedule was usually overly ambitious and thusly conflicting for most every other class, and Latin was almost relaxing compared to the rest of my classes.
Oh well. I'm feeling completely muse-less today, and need to go and do something to find it again.

Re: Randomness
Latin is able to say many things and to suggest many feelings and emotions with few words.
Odi et amo. Quare id faciam, fortasse requiris.
Nescio, sed fieri sentio et excrucior.
Gaius Valerius Catullus. Carmina. Odi et amo (LXXXV)

Re: Randomness
Okay I had a very, very, strict childhood. One I am forever grateful for. I had a wonderful mother that was determined her kids would not be unsupervised and run amok with their entertainment. There for the only "real TV" in our lives was Star Trek, Scarecrow And Mrs. King, and good old-fashioned classics. For Example, Battlestar Galactica and The Wild Wild West... Now I love Ron Moore, I do my memories of TNG helped shape who I am. But for cryin out loud he just loves to screw with my childhood! Look at this...http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/10/05/ ... ron-moore/
Okay Robert Conrad is not my most shining moment when it comes to TV crushes, but I can't watch the new Hawaii 5-0, even though my mother says it's great and I'm a moron. But now there has to be another "Jim West" that isn't Robert Conrad???????? I gotta cry.

Some of these people haven't taken their medication. Let's see what happens now...

Cool! Mine are always very basic, too.
On the same note, I always enjoy this website this time of the year:
