Maybe there was some kind of contest: "if you win, you'll be allowed to make a fool of yourself in public". I don't know, the other three girls are the seiyüs (voices) from the anime, so maybe the boys are too. But obviously they can't dance even for their lives
The melancholy thing comes from the fact that the protagonist Haruhi Suzumiya (or Suzumiya Haruhi) is always bored (hence the melancholy) and expecting all kind of exciting things like aliens or time-travelers. What she doesn't know is that she is, in fact, the creator of the world (a Goddess, you could say) and there is people in her world triying to cheer her up and prevent her from being bored because if she is, she will destroy the world and create another new (and those characters will die with it.) Ahhhh... the eccentricities of the anime...
