New Fanfiction System Feedback

Am I doing something wrong? I can't get into any of the stories. All I get is a white screen and the little spinning wheel that shows the story's loading, but it never does.

That's what you'll get now if you go to the old fanfic page - Mike disabled it so there was no confusion about links not working (on the old page the links were just dead), now there is no old page.

Btw, Mike is now keeping tabs on this thread, so he'll see everything you guys are posting:

1) Some fics seem to be out of date order

2) Fics from the last add aren't there (and 1 or 2 from before aren't there)

What fics aren't present that were posted earlier than March 10th?

I already mentioned that the latest chapter of The Captives (chapter 7) was missing, so I just wait and see what happens? (and change my links in my profile afterwards, because they are - of course - not working anymore.)

As Asso mentioned earlier, chapter 6 of "The Briar Patch" is missing. It had never made it to the Archve section. Maybe that's why it disappeared. If you have trouble finding it again, let me know. Thanks.

Ok, so some people are saying their bookmarks aren't working.

Unfortunately that is not going to be fixed. All your bookmarks before yesterday relating to triaxiansilk.com will not work... apart from the BBS board... I didn't touch that.

I figure a little explanation as to why I initially offered to help out Elessar and dark_rain and what I did will help you realise why there are mistakes and why things have changed.

I first noticed when reading fics on TS that some of the links were broken. Each story or chapter was contained in a seperate file.

When I looked at the code I saw that each page was being coded BY HAND!

That is a LOT of work. So I figured that as I had done it before with other sites I would offer my services to TS.

Building the basics of the site was relatively easy.

But, each fic had to be converted BY HAND into a database. That means I had to go through 628 fics and their chapters. It works out to nearly 1500 entries.

Bearing in mind this is a mere human being going through pages and pages and inputting them, there ARE going to be mistakes.

The good news is that when an admin adds a new fic all the links are created automatically. No more broken links between chapters.

Then I realised I hadn't put the dates in so I had to go back through all 600+ fics and do those by hand... again. So again, there will be mistakes.

Over the next few weeks some of you will find bugs and errors. And Captain Elessar will call down to Engineering and ever so calmly inform the Engineer that if we don't get going soon the Klingons will be knocking down the hatches.

The Engineer will frantically respond that he's given it all he's got and she jus' canna' take no more... in a very bad scottish accent.

He will eventually get the system fixed... Captain Elessar might have to be rescued from performing hand-to-hand combat with with a large Klingon because a scantily clad female Klingon (with strangely good teeth for a klingon) has claimed him as her mate... but the system will be fixed.

You can be assured that should the Engineer fail to get it working... he will be transferred to Security and summarily given a red shirt... and sent on an away mission to protect the Captain. You may if you are so inclined, place bets on whether or not he survives.

Try to remember that in the grand scheme of things, a working life support is more important than the cup-holder in the Captain's chair... but don't tell him that.

I'm working on adding the new stories. There is some aesthetic funkiness but please give me a break right now, the important things are that the stories are there, at least some of them, and we're working on the particulars. (By 'some of them' I mean I'm posting the rest of the stories as I write this , not like 'just make do' )

By particulars I mean things like, apostrophes and quotes are showing up with slashes... Chapter 5 of Command shows up as Chapter 6 and Chapter 5 doesn't show up quite right in the drop down menu... There are duplicate Chapter 23's of Cry Havoc (one labeled Chapter 24) because Mike used it as a test fic when he fixed an SQL error so we both unknowingly added the same chapter

But these things are being ironed out.

PS: I may not have mentioned this publicly, but I have a new full time job during the day now as well as my 2nd job on weekends, so I just may not be as accessible to field questions in real time the way I would be able to with free days. This weekend I'm scheduled 61 hrs between 40 during the week and 21 this weekend, but I'm supposed to get Sundays off starting next weekend, so at the very least, on each Sunday I'll be able to catch up on anything that has slipped through the cracks during the week. But I'm not saying I'm not going to be doing any administrating during the week - adding fics won't take nearly as long anymore, so that will be easier. But any kind of technical, diplomatic or administrative heavy lifting may have to wait until Sundays... Unless I'm feeling athletic on Friday after midnight or Saturday before noon
